I wonder if something spurred Amanda to call. Perhaps she saw the imminent need to do something to protect the little girl.

It just is unusual for a victim of 10 years to make the call to rescue themselves.

Respectfully snipped by me.

The "recently disturbed soil" in the backyard could be a trigger, something that happened that kickstarted her need to seek help. To suddenly make the decision that they had to get out of there.

JMO.

There are many neighborhoods where neighbors keep to themselves. I've lived in them! I know most of my neighbors where I am now, but I still wouldn't know if any of them had a secret soundproof room in their homes. It makes one shudder to think....

How many more of our missing are alive in someone's home right this minute? How can we help them?

I know I thought the same thing. There was a case just recently of a girl who had been missing for years was found also in he same kind of neighbor. Her name wasn't released I don't believe. How common is this? How many of our missing are alive and captive???

Possibly the other teen missing from 2007 or perhaps additional children born into this this horrible nightmare. I fear so many more things are going to come out in the coming days.

Good point. It would be unusual for only one child to be born in the ten years they were held captive and with three women.

There is also the problem of unattended home births. Both mothers and babies would be at risk.

Charles Ramsy is going to get a lot of phone calls, because the 911 call was not redacted, and he gave his phone number to dispatchers.

CNN phone interview-

A. Castro (female relative of suspect): Even his Mom used to come to house...didn't notice anyone...even us outside everyday, we saw nothing.

...when he was drinking, he was social...only when he was drinking...other times, always serious...

Earlier when Anderson Cooper brought up the other girl the person he was talking to quickly said they didn't want to get into that and there was a lot of stuff going around the streets... I thought then that perhaps they had information about her that wasn't positive.

What a miracle! May the people responsible see justice and these women be able to reclaim their lives.

I hope that somehow these women can get hooked up with Jaycee Dugard and her JAY-C foundation, which focuses on "providing, supporting and ensuring the timely treatment of families that are recovering from abduction and the aftermath of other traumatic experience" per the JAY-C Foundation website (http://thejaycfoundation.org/about-us/). The way Jaycee, like Elizabeth Smart, has reclaimed her life is an inspiration and I can think of few women who share similar experiences. I hope they can meet.

Um.. really weird....read the comments section under the article posted above. One poster linked an article, written in 2004 about DeJesus' disappearance.....author is Ariel Castro....which is the same name as the owner of the house the girls were found in.

http://www.nhlink.net/plainpress/html/stories/2004-06/dejesusdisappearancechangesneighborhood.htm

OMG. The kidnapper WROTE this article about the kidnapping.[ I cut and pasted it because I think it will go POOF very soon.

ETA: Just was informed it was the kidnapper's son who wrote this article. I still find it very creepy. His father and uncles were keeping theses girls as sex slaves. Was it a concidence the son wrote this article?

Gina DeJesus’ disappearance has changed her neighborhood
by Ariel Castro

(Plain Press, June 2004) Since April 2, 2004 , the day 14-year-old Gina DeJesus was last seen on her way home from Wilbur Wright Middle School , neighborhood residents have been taken by an overwhelming need for caution. Parents are more strictly enforcing curfews, encouraging their children to walk in groups, or driving them to and from school when they had previously walked alone.

“You can tell the difference,” DeJesus’ mother, Nancy Ruiz said. “People are watching out for each other’s kids. It’s a shame that a tragedy had to happen for me to really know my neighbors. Bless their hearts, they’ve been great.”

On Cleveland ’s west side, it is difficult to go any length of time without seeing Gina’s picture on telephone poles, in windows, or on cars along the busy streets.

“People are really looking out for my daughter,” Ruiz said.

For seven weeks, Gina’s family has been organizing searches, holding prayer vigils, posting fliers and calling press conferences. Despite the many tips and rumors that have been circulating in the neighborhood, there has been no sign of her.

One thing is for certain, however. Almost everyone feels a connection with the family, and Gina’s disappearance has the whole area talking.

“It’s traumatized a lot of people,” Bob Zak, Safety Coordinator of the Westown Community Development Corporation, said. “People are suspicious of everyone. Kids, parents, and grandparents are afraid.”

The organization serves Cleveland ’s Ward 19, which stretches from West Boulevard to West 134th Street .

Parents and relatives waiting for their children as school let out at Wilbur Wright recently expressed concern about the number of sex offenders living and working in the area.

“I really believe there needs to be more security,” Vaneetha Smith said as she waited for her niece outside Wilbur Wright Middle School at the end of the day. “We have too many kidnappings, and they should crack down on all the sex offenders in the area.”

Luis Perez echoed Smith’s concerns as he waited for his niece at the school.

“I think the neighborhood is pretty bad,” he said. “You have to be aware of some people out there.”

The Ohio Electronic Sex Offender Registration and Notification (eSORN) database lists 133 sex offenders living or working in Gina’s immediate zip code. Many residents of the area, however, cannot use the database, as they do not have access to the Internet at home.

“I have been here almost four years and I have been notified of only one sex offender,” Ruiz said. “And he lives only about 1,000 feet away from here.”

Ohio law prohibits sex offenders who are required to register from establishing their residence within 1,000 feet of school buildings.

“There is no enforcing the laws because they still live right next to the schools and the bus stops,” Ruiz said. She believes the process of registering sex offenders is essentially a waste of time.

At a Ward 19 crime watch meeting, one of ten monthly, residents describe the area as a multi-ethnic community where people work and try to keep their housing up to par. They feel the disappearance of Amanda Berry on April 21, 2003 was a wake-up call, but Gina’s case really caught everyone’s attention.

Many residents believe the schools and the city have more work to do to help out.

“There is not enough supervision at the schools and when the kids get out, they still run through the streets,” Smith said. “They say that once they leave the school premises, the school is not responsible for them. But until they reach their house, I believe they are. They should be more concerned with their safety.”

“The school is supposed to be a safe place,” Perez said. “They need more police around the schools, surrounding the area. Without that, it’s just going to keep on going and there will be more innocent people getting hurt.”

Isaac Rodriguez has seen some changes happen at Wilbur Wright.

“There are more security guards at the school now,” the father of two middle school students said. “They have been having assemblies and talking to the kids about the danger.”

“When you send your kids out to school now”, Smith said, “you don’t know if they are going to make it home or not. From West 105th to [West 110th], anything could happen. I feel the mayor should do something about that. The children should be our first priority, no matter what else is going on in the city.”

Zak, a former Cleveland police officer of 30 years, believes the community is feeling the effects of the city’s cuts in the police force.

“The first thing a city should do is protect its citizens,” he said. Although police cannot be on the scene of every crime as they occur, Zak reports that residents are getting responses to calls “one, two, and four hours later.”

Cuts in the police force are not the only budget changes that are directly affecting residents. The Cleveland Municipal School District is also mulling how it will eliminate its projected $100 million budget deficit. Among the items cut will be purchased services, employee overtime, supplemental pay, textbooks, school staff and student transportation.

Oh mercy, my DH and I are laughing in a good way at the interview with Charles. Bless that man! What a memorable day for him and what an incredible blessing for these families whose girls have been found! Praise God!

"So I'm eating my McDonalds." And later "You know when a pretty white girl jumps in a black man's arms there's something wrong." Hahaha love this guy! He physically broke down his neighbor's door, whom he apparently knew and trusted, to rescue this girl no questions asked. Please let him receive a huge reward for rescuing these girls!

Oh no, another demented maniac or three...I can see how 3 women/young girls could be kept all of this time but that's only because I have watched horror movies in my lifetime...I hope it's not that complex or horrid to understand. Afraid that it is though.

I'm so glad their voice has been heard. So very glad they were found alive!

How could these women have served men sexually and not one man came to their rescue by calling LE?! That is if they were sex slaves to more than the three brothers. SICK. Sorry just thinking out loud.

  • #355
Oh dear those poor girls I just can't fathom what they have all been through

CNN has shown the picture of another girl that was missing in the same area from around the same time

I am sure they will know soon enough if the soil means anything, we are not hearing reports of them digging in the backyard so if the girls reported another girl they would be digging though maybe they would wait till morning

Something spurred Amanda to call. After 10 years she had to think screaming was fruitless bc I am sure she tried it before

It seems he did not have an elaborate contraption w sound proofing etc unless they normally are in soundproof but for whatever reason that day they were not or they were able to escape the sound proof.

Amanda and Gina got plenty coverage here in Cleveland. Our local news still mentions them regularly. I JUST had a conversation with my 15 and 13 year old daughters about them. Last week we spoke about human trafficking and I was convinced the families just needed to find their remains and have closure. Obviously I know nothing?? So happy they are alive.

That 911 dispatcher kept trying to get her off the phone, almost like they did not get the seriousness. They kept saying " Talk to the police when they get there." :frown:

The article was not written by the suspect. It was written by Ariel Anthony Castro. His son.

John Walsh says he is supposed to present her with an award in Washington. I have a feeling these girls will be discussed with her.

Okay, this may sound odd, but I much prefer when a monster looks like a monster. I think AC has a kind face, gives me the heevie jeevies, just goes to show ANYONE can be a monster. I have worked in LE in the past for fifteen years, and it never ceases to amaze me how some of the outward kindest most normal people are NOT....IMHO

Respectfully disagree with the bolded part. I immediatly disliked him a lot. he looks slick and arrogant imo.

That makes me feel a little better. It just made me feel so sad that Gina only has 2 pages in 2004 here, and as the poster above notes, it is because she is not a blue eyes blond. It is really a shame,

I think they just said on CNN that Amanda's mom had died, very sad, Amanda's happiness in gettin rescued has to be tempered by that news

It was reported earlier here that he made her watch the news of her mother's death on TV. It wasn't news to her today.
