Animals and Fireworks

I hesitate to bring this up but maybe you can save a pet...

A few years ago, this family left their dog outside around the 4th of July and were gone all day. It was hot outside and apparently some kids were teasing the dog and threw it a firework. The dog pcked it up and it blew up inside his mouth... he was running around looking for water outside the house and didn't have any and wound up dying.

I can't remember the entire story but this happened in Illinois near Alton.
The kids did it on purpose and we were waiting to see what would happen to them ... what kind of punishment.

This is a very sad story ... but my point in bringing it up is please keep your pets indoors while you are gone if you can help it. There are cruel punk kids out there who could do something similar.
I wouldn't want any of s to lose our pets.
I think Im not capable of murder....yet when I read something like this I begin to wonder:confused:

That's right Dingo, let me at 'em!
I get so angry over stuff like that...poor little defenceless animals.

Luckily we take animal cruelty quite seriously here in Oz, people go to jail for being cruel to animals.

Ya know, my Vet tells me not to put any kind of collar on my cat, that he could get hung up on stuff outside with one on and it could strangle him.

I kept my cat in all day today but we had company over and one of their kids let my cat out and he hasn't come home yet. He is home every night by 9 PM (I swear animals must be able to tell time!) and it's 1 AM. now so I'm getting very nervous that something might have happened to him.

OLG, I was afraid of collars for the same reasons as you, so my two cats are collarless. Sorry to hear that your cat hasn't shown up; hope he shows up by morning.

You just need to get a collar that has elastic in it, then if they get stuck they won't strangle themselves.
Lostgirl, I hope Dog came home.

My outdoor cats are usually gone for the night of the 4th through the morning of the 6th every year. Your cat is most likely curled up in the top of a tree meowing to get down, or hiding in a bush. Once it gets hungry, the cat will come home. I'm sending good thoughts your way, I know you must be worried.

My horse didn't even flinch at the fireworks this year. A friend brought over bottle rockets and other things and we put the horse in the smaller pen behind the house. He must have gotten all his running out last year. :-)

The dogs, however, never came out from under the trailer until we bribed them with leftover hamburgers.

I am praying for your cats return, and asking for St. Francis of Assisi and St. Anthony of Padua for prayers, as well.

They have "break away" collars for that very reason, now. But otherwise, no, outdoor cats shouldn't have collars on, typically. I'm sure he is just hiding after last night's fireworks, somewhere.

All cats should have collars on, especially the outdoor ones.
If they are not chipped, a collar with a tag are the only way to identify the animal if they are lost etc...

Lostgirl, has Dog come home yet?

Dog came home at about 1:30 am. Tired but kinda skittish and slept all the way thru until 10am in bed with me.

Thanks for thinkin' of me and praying, everyone!

I'm not big on organized religon, but St. Jude has come through for me when no one else has - so I asked him to keep your kitty safe. I don't know who or what came through for you (maybe just the kitty's own wits) but I'm glad it's home.

We took our kids to the fireworks show this year in a nearby town. We have 3 dogs and I am watching a friend's dog for 6 weeks while she is away. Anyway they all stayed home. Our beagle runs to the bathtub to hide whenever there is a thunderstorm. The vet gave us doggy valium to give her when a storm is predicted. She is a formerly abused dog but that is another story. Anyway while at the fireworks (and it was pouring rain most of the evening) here comes this family, all wearing ponchos to keep them dry, dragging along their poor little mini poodle. No raingear for him and he was getting wet. He began thrashing and twisting, trying to escape his leash and collar when the fireworks started. His "people" just laughed at him. Made me want to wring their necks.

What is wrong with people?

I wouldn't have been able to help myself, I would have said something to them.

The BarnGod decided to go into town to check the draft horses that pull the Old Town wagon each weekend. I did convince him not to drive on the 4th of July because of some people shooting off fireworks at home that might frighten the horses. He took two of our dogn with him and decided to stay as his daughter met him in town. They decided to stay for the town fireworks. Our big dog got into the cab of the truck and shook on the floor. The little Welsh Corgi puppy thought the whole experience was a hoot and barked and had a ball. Go figure.

What is wrong with these sickos!:furious: Those kids will grow up to be serial killers. Anybody that could be that cruel to toss a lit firecracker into an animals mouth- water or not!!! They deserve a special place in Hell!!!:furious: :furious: :furious:

We decided to try and take our 2-year-old Lab with us to the fireworks show. The noise didn't bother her, the brightness did- she hopped into my husband's lap for her daddy to protect her. She loved the mass walk before and after, was a magnet for all the other Black Labs we saw!
