I think that is quite possible, Nan. (I'm sure their record company does market projections.) If so, theirs was not the most productive response, but pretty human, I'm afraid.

I am not sure there was any intent to specifically "dis" Reba McIntire (a brilliant singer, IMHO) or her fans. I think the reference to three very different artists in the CD changer may have just been a way to describe the broadest possible country fan. The speaker was just saying they didn't want to stay in the "box" necessary to appeal to that broad base of fans.

I agree with all you have said here, Nova.

By them putting Reba in the comment with TK is like a slap to Reba. Obviously everyone knows how they feel about TK. So why bring poor reba into it???

You may be right, Michelle. I don't pretend to know any of the Chicks. But if it was an off-the-cuff remark, it may not have as much meaning as it appears to have.

Thats true and if that is the case, they really have bad luck when it comes to making public comments.....:D

Well, if one is in the public eye, yet persists in making careless remarks, I don't think one can blame the resulting reaction on bad luck. :)

Well, at this point, they don't really need the money, so they probably don't care about how any of this affects their careers, lol.

Obviously the Chicks are mad at the fallout from the Bush comment in the UK and are now venting, lol. Just to play devil's advocate, does anyone think their comment about Bush would have been viewed as inflammatory if they had been guys? It isn't like rock singers haven't criticized him, although I don't know if it was ever done overseas by anyone else.
During their 2003 tour Eddie Vedder (from Pearl Jam), acted out in 'negative' ways towards Bush while they were in Australia and Japan. He also did some of these things during American concerts. He was known for using certain props like a Bush mask to illustrate his feelings or having a picture of Bush pinned to the inside of his jacket with the pin through his head. Reactions were varied, and some people didn't like it. At one Denver event, people even walked out of the concert. But it didn't last negatively as long with him or the band's image as long as it has with the Dixie Chicks. Then, of course you have Bono, who is a foreigner himself. Bruce Springsteen has said a thing or two. I think all of them collaborated on the Rock The Vote concert, or whatever it was called, just before the 2004 election.

Thanks for the link, Lilly. Maybe gender does have something to do with it.

Of course it's hard to compare rockers with country artists because the audience is so different. Had the Dixie Chicks been alt rockers, there might never have been a fuss. Maybe it's the alternative music audience they want now. My stepson, whose taste runs very alternative, loves them (and he's no country fan).

You have a very good point regarding the different audiences. Country fans would be more pro-Bush whereas rockers would be far more liberal. But the gender may be an issue as well, some.

I have always like the Dixie Chick's music but they have lost me as a fan for life now. I was personally offended by that comment that they don't want that kind of a fan. Fine... I won't be that kind of fan since you don't want that kind. I've put my money out there and bought several of their CD's. I didn't like her first comment about being embarrassed to be from Texas but I was okay enough with it as that was her choice. But when she starts putting down the fans who pay for the CD's forget it. I love all kinds of music, not just country and I don't have a 5 disc changer I have a 200 disc changer in my room. I also have all these CDs on my computer so I can listen anywhere in the house... (hubby has them on a network so any computer in the house can access them). My Dixie Chicks are sandwiched in between Diamond Rio and Donny Osmond and guess what... I'll take either one of them over the Dixie Chicks any day now. Because I don't want to be offending them by being that kind of fan. So no more Dixie Chick's albums. They can go be nobody's if that is what they want since they don't appreciate us paying fans. I can't think of anyone that likes only one group and supports only one group. Thats insane and immature of them if they think we would do that for them. No... I don't "get it" as Natalie so puts it. She so needs to get over herself and stop thinking they are so important.

Yes, I agree, Nova. The audience makes a difference too.

At the very bottom of the article from the commondreams.org link, it mentions that Carlos Santana made comments about the Iraq war and Bush while he was in Australia too and it all was received well by the crowd. So, I guess you never know and you have to consider the audience.

That was an odd comment, to say the least, lol. Poor Reba. They're a bit cranky, I'd say, after all of this. Be interesting to see how their album sales do.
Sales , is what its all about . They must be short on attention again..

"Taking The Long Way" is the top seller in music at Amazon. Looks like they still have lots of fans.

Now that all of the new remarks are out it will be interesting to see how their record sales do. I would guess that it won't be a lot of country music lovers that are doing the buying.

This thing started out with the remark about Pres. Bush and Texas but it has gone well beyond that now. When a singer or group start disrespecting their co-country singers and put down country music fans it has gone well beyond that one remark. Now it has nothing to do with Pres Bush or the war.

I was listening to Bill O'Rielly tonight and he shared a conversation that he had with Natalee at some magazine thing over the weekend. He said that he walked up to her and congratulated her on having the courage to speak her mind, etc. A short conversation. Today he read that he walked up to her and congradulated her and said that he agreed with what she said in England, etc, etc. She twisted their conversation to be something totally different then what it was. He read the article and then he answered her on the air. It really was pretty funny. Pat Boone was a guest on Neil Couvuto and Pat had some interesting things to say about the Chicks. I have so much respect for Pat Boone and agreed with everything he had to say.

Now Natalee is saying that singing Country music isn't what she wanted in the first place...it isn't her and on and on. Well Chicks, no one is holding you here so there is the door and don't let it hit you in the butts as you exit.

I wonder what Natalee is like to live with. Can't help but feel a little sorry for her husband.
