Good point. I thought this was a good starting point to see what CPS thought was acceptable housing for children and adolescents.

Anyway, it's probably moot now anyway.

A representative from the Arkansas Child Protective Services made the following statement via press release, “The recent admission of guilt from Josh Duggar surrounding his involvement in the abuse of children is not only troubling, but it is a clear sign that our involvement is needed. With our current knowledge of the events that transpired in the Duggar home, it would be against the law for our organization to turn a blind eye to the potential abuse transpiring in the home (the Duggar home).”
Dale Lancaster, a veteran social worker within the Department of Arkansas Protective Services, told CNN correspondent Lisa Cornia, during a brief interview, “It is not uncommon for a parent to feel the need to cover up the mistakes of their children, however mistakes that result in the abuse, physical or sexual, of the other children in the home, cannot be ignored. It is hard for a parent of 2 or 3 children to have a full understanding of everything that is happening in the home, I can only imagine trying to keep up with the activities of 19 children, 8 of which are under the age of 16. Our hope is that our presence is welcome by the entire family, including Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar.”

It probably isnt an optimal time for Josh and Anna to return to the Duggar compound if CPS is launching a full investigation. But I hope they do and I hope the family fully cooperates. Again. And Josh fully cooperates this time. There is no reason he shouldnt in terms of completing his penance, right? A forthright and upstanding guy who has confessed to his crimes recently-mommy and daddy cant say no for him this time.

It says a lot that the Duggars couldnt get a defense attorney to represent him in 2006.

So when they had 9 kids in one bedroom and 7 or 8 in another, and two bathrooms to be used by 18 people or so, where was Arkansas CPS. If this was all televised, where were the officials who had proof that the housing, privacy and care standards were not being met by the clan.

http://www.childwelfare.gov/pubPDFs/homestudyreqs.pdf
Minimum Standards for Foster Homes Ann. Code § 38-7-7; Admin. Code R. 660-5-29-03
The department shall prescribe and publish minimum standards for licensing and for approving foster care homes. The standards shall include regulations pertaining to the appropriateness, safety, cleanliness, and general adequacy of the premises, including maintenance of adequate fire prevention and health standards conforming to State laws and municipal codes to provide for the physical comfort, care, well-being, and safety of children.
In regulation: The home and grounds shall be maintained in a clean and safe condition.
• A play space for indoor and outdoor activities will be provided. • The residence shall have a working telephone, electrical service, gas, comfortably regulated cooling and heating, adequate
lighting, and a safe water supply. • Beds and mattresses shall be of size and quality to allow good sleeping posture. • Separate sleeping rooms shall be provided for children over age 6 who are of the opposite sex. • An adequate number of bedrooms shall be provided for all persons residing in the home. • Sanitary bathroom facilities that provide privacy shall be available for use by family members and foster children. • Nothing that constitutes a hazard is allowed on the property. There shall be appropriate safeguards against potential hazards.

Just how far does this cult's influence reach? I guess pretty far if a judge illegally destroys legal documents at their request. Or if a former governor minimizes the damage done by Josh.

They did not start the TV series until after all of this happened. Each kid had a bed, although they used bunk beds to maximize sleeping room. The bedrooms now ate big, but still have bunk beds and at least 4 kids per room.
The records were destroyed because there were never any charges filed. He was neither charged with a crime nor convicted.

Apparently they are partial to a matching color clothing scheme. Perhaps Jim Bob owns only the one tie.

I will refrain from commenting on the lamp growing out of Michelle's head, or the horns it gives her.

Unless they flipped one of the photos, it is a similar, but different, tie. The stripes are slanted the other way.

Jim Bob and Michelle’s response to Josh’s actions was not only a moral failure. It also may have been a crime in itself.

Along with civil penalties for child maltreatment, “permitting abuse of a minor” counts as a criminal offense under Arkansas law. The offense is punishable as a felony when a parent “recklessly fails to take action to prevent” the sexual abuse of a minor. The statute provides a defense if the parent “takes immediate steps to end the abuse of the minor, including prompt notification of a medical or law enforcement authority, upon first knowing or having good reason to know that abuse has occurred.”

(ATI, the Duggar's church/cult/sect) Members have a directory to use to find nearby families when they are traveling. Obviously, it’s nice to have time with like-minded families—for even the Duggars have said their kids need to be with other such families to avoid feeling like the “only ones” who live this way (“18 Kids and Counting: Big Family in Big Sandy”)—but it also serves to keep ATI/IBLP members “in line.” You’d have a hard time hiding a big screen TV or your son’s R-rated posters if a bus full of fellow ATI-ers pulled up for the night on short notice. “Walking the Talk” is a 24/7 requirement.

It's totally a thing in their culture. You guys have to read this article. For years one of my concerns about the Duggars is how the life they portray and promote is one that most cannot sustain. They are Quiverfull royalty. But there are so many other families with these beliefs and this culture that are not royalty. And many of those families seriously suffer.

The following article explains that in great detail with a lot of info about the quirks of the lifestyle, including the matching (promotes family unity).

Remember, Andrea Yates and her family was from this culture. And we know what happened with her - Can you imagine having post-partum psychosis but having to continually "trust God with the size of your family"? Oh boy.

I'm so dumb. I am not connecting the dots here!

We know for sure they didn't receive counseling because if they had the abuse would've been officially reported in 2003 not 2006 since counselors are mandatory reporters.

To me, all of this focus on being debt free is even more materialistic than focusing on money if I am making any sense at all. They spend all of their energy on trying to exist by being debt free. It is like the story of , "Don't think about the pink elephant!"

All they can think about it how to beat the system.

Records can be kept, though, to establish a pattern

From the article link:
In fact, like many of today’s Quiverfull families, they lived very humbly for many years saving for that dream home.

****
I don't have a link for this, but it is common knowledge that their dream house came to be because originally, JimBob had purchased a 3,500 sq "house kit", and when he finally got around to taking out the pieces to build it, found that there were pieces missing. Instead of sending it back, the company he purchased it from found it would be cheaper to just send him another 3,500 sq ft house kit...hence, the 7,000 sq house.

He was taking so long to build it, that TLC eventually stepped in and paid to have it finished for him (because they were on the brink of the series, or still filming the specials, I don't know which). And the much of the furniture and the grand piano in there, were comped to them (ie, they didn't pay for any of it).

So, I take exception to this article alluding that JimBob scrimped and saved to build his family this dream house. More than likely, like the snake-oil salesman he is, he saw an opportunity and grabbed it.

ETA: Video them moving into the new house, complete with the suprise grand piano and new furniture, and, of course, TLC's paid crew of builders and designers:

From the Duggar website:

Next Week
May 30, 2015

Next week we will sit down with Megyn Kelly on Fox News to share our hearts with you about the pain that we walked through as a family twelve years ago, the tears we all shed and the forgiveness that was given. We appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers for our family at this time.

-Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar

Here's the real story from the wiki page:

Construction of their 7,000 square-foot (650 square-meter) house began in 2000 when they bought the lot and ordered two steel frames. One of the frames was not drilled correctly, so the Duggars received a third frame which was used to make the girls' room and the industrial kitchen. Discovery Networks completed it, finding local Arkansas construction workers to donate their skills and time. The home was completed on January 20, 2006 . Some of the painting, decorating, furnishings, appliances, and other finishing touches—such as a stocked pantry—were provided by Discovery Networks and corporate sponsors as part of the one-hour television special entitled 16 Children and Moving In.

It came out because a male relative wrote down what happened, folded the paper and put it in s book, which was subsequently loaned to a 61 year old woman who belonged to their church. She knew the family was filming Oprah, so she wrote to Harpo, and they fotwardednit to police. They sent the Duggars home, did not air the show, and when they got home, the police began investigating/interviewing the family.

Was it determined that the writer was male?

Correct! The article is fake. There was a similar fake article that circulated using the same fake names of the CNN reporter and CPS person, when the mother slapped her son for participating in the riots.

I highly doubt CPS will conduct any kind of investigation, unless there are new allegations.

Also, a lot of the mandatory reporting laws are fairly new. They can differ state to state. I have no idea how the law was written in Arkansas, when these offenses occurred.

As others have mentioned, I highly doubt that the truth was told to anyone at the time and it was most likely worded as Josh having impure thoughts/actions, which in their sect could translate to failing to look away when you see some uncovered legs.

Ugh!!

So what caused this to come out now?? The Oprah thing was years ago, right? (Not snipping at you, Lisa, just using your post to ask the question.) That part has always been confusing to me. Is it because one of the victims wanted her name redacted out of the original report, and in processing that request, someone said, "Hey, look at this....dirt on the Duggars", and that was all it took?

It will be interesting to "see" (I won't watch) if Kelly asks any tough questions, or if she just acts like Huckabee.

  • #159
A little too late for any damage control! IMO there is nothing they can say to sugar coat this. I'm appalled their even going to try.

I am also, sad part, I will watch just to see what nonsense they will spew. I have never watched the Kelly File, there is nothing in the summer that I watch at 9 on Wednesday night, so why not? And I can also guarantee I will be yelling at the TV.

Keep us/me posted. That's my golf night. I come home tired and relaxed. Best I keep it that way LOL
