Details of Disappearance

Matthew's mother met a woman in 1983 who called herself Kathy Johnson. She was a worker at a rodeo that had stopped in Fort Smith, Arkansas. A friend of Matthew's family met her and introduced her to Matthew's mother. The baby's father was in jail at the time, and Matthew's mother needed help with child care, so she asked Johnson to stay in her Van Buren, Arkansas home for a week to watch her three children.

There was a party at Matthew's home on the night of June 9, 1983, and alcohol was served. When Matthew's mother woke up in the morning, he and Johnson were both gone and the family car, a 1973 Chevrolet Vega, was also missing. Three other children were left at the trailer, including Matthew's one-year-old sister, who shared a crib with him.

The stolen Chevrolet was found abandoned at a rest stop near Sallisaw, Oklahoma the next day. Neither Matthew nor his abductor has ever been seen again.

Johnson had told Matthew's mother she was twenty-six years old. She also said she had lost two children shortly after they were born; she said her children, had they lived, would have been nine and six years old by 1983. She may also use the first name Judy.

A composite sketch of the abductor is posted with this case summary. She's described as Caucasian and about 5'4, with blonde hair. She had a chipped or decayed front tooth, a six- to seven-inch scar on her shoulder blade, and a puncture scar six to eight inches above her right knee. She had the following tattoos: a green and yellow star or sunburst on the left side of her chest, a unicorn on her upper left arm, and the name "Kathy" with a ribbon above it on her upper right arm.

Matthew and his abductor may have traveled through Utah to California after Matthew's abduction. Authorities believe the abductor may have taken Matthew to raise him as her son. They think he's probably still alive and doesn't know his true identity.

Edit to add: From some previous older article - He was born with a concave chest, a relatively rare condition that affects about one in 1,000 children. Surgery may have been required to correct this medical anomaly.

Just came across this case today. Bumping up for Matthew and his true family. What a tragedy. Hopefully the truth will still come to light. Someone out there would recognize the kidnapper's tattoos. A crime show needs to feature this case, IMO.

If this had nationwide coverage especially then and even now I wonder if the abductor would be identified. Those are distinctive tattoos somebody must know this woman.

VAN BUREN, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — It’s the summer of 1983 in Van Buren, police reports are written on typewriters, Amber Alerts do not exist, and a four-month-old baby is missing.

“It’s hard to go back and get the evidence you didn’t know you needed back then,” Sgt. Jonathan Wear said.

Sgt. Wear says they’ve had a suspect from day one, Kathy Johnson.

I hope this man is still alive. The woman may or may not be alive? Those tattoos may be hard to identify in her old age. I suspect they went to California, Texas or Mexico. Probably somewhere we're not thinking of. BUMPING in April 2024!

On the Charley project it says "She may have traveled through Utah to California" such a broad piece of information! There's also an updated age progression of Matthew! Xxxx

I've also been doing more research, regarding the claim by investigators thinking Kathy traveled through Utah to California and list of all counties along I 40 excluding Utah unless she took a detour which would make that journey to California even longer.

The California remark came from someone who believed a woman resembled Kathy Johnson was overheard at an Oklahoma rest stop saying she was heading to California. (where investigators got this tip I don't know)

Now we don't know exactly where the car was found abandoned only that it was found abandoned at a "rest stop near Sallisaw, Oklahoma".

Near Sallisaw, Oklahoma, along Interstate 40, there are two main rest stops where the family car could have been abandoned:

1. Sallisaw Eastbound Rest Area — located just east of Sallisaw on I-40.

2. Sallisaw Westbound Rest Area — located just west of Sallisaw on I-40.

If the tip about Kathy Johnson heading to California is true, it suggests she and Matthew likely traveled west from Oklahoma along major highways. That would mean passing through Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona on Interstate 40.

Which include from Sallisaw, through Oklahoma

>Beckham County (last Oklahoma County before Texas)

>Texas Wheeler County (first Texas county)

>Texas Gray County

>Texas Carson County

>Texas Potter County (Amarillo)

>Oldham County (last before New Mexico)

Then

>New Mexico quay County

>New Mexico Guadalupe County

>New Mexico Torrance County

>New Mexico Bernalillo County (Albuquerque)

>New Mexico Cibola County

>New Mexico McKinley County

Then

>Arizona Apache County

>Arizona Navajo County

>Arizona Coconino County (Flagstaff)

>Arizona Yavapai County

>Arizona Mohave County (includes Kingman; borders California)

> California San Bernardino County (massive county covering the Mojave Desert and Route 66 corridor)

Then depending on the route taken, potentially Los Angeles County, Riverside County, or Kern County.

----------
Why Utah is mentioned and I've also seen in archived news articles, of Matthew's case having a brief segment in Utah papers, I don't know.

The only strong lead, is the families vehicle being abandoned at a rest stop near Sallisaw, Oklahoma. She could of met up with someone there and carried on the journey to California or hitchhiked, or she resided in Sallisaw.

The rest stops near Sallisaw are typically just a few miles outside the town itself. Specifically:

Sallisaw Eastbound Rest Area is about 3 miles east of Sallisaw town center.

Sallisaw Westbound Rest Area is roughly 2 to 3 miles west of the town center.

So, if Kathy abandoned the car at either rest stop, she would have needed to travel approximately 2 to 3 miles to reach Sallisaw town.

Sallisaw, Oklahoma, is a small town and does not have a regular public bus system or significant public transportation options within the town itself.

Leaving the only options after abandoning the only vehicle Kathy had of ringing friends or family, she didn't have regular in person contact with as if they did have regular in person contact with her and she didn't show signs of pregnancy or wasn't known to be in a relationship when they last saw her, they would be suspicious of how Kathy had a baby with her.

It does depend what her friends and family knew.
