odd that a white female would be wearing a black family t shirt.

The shirt at the link is being modeled by what appears to be a white guy. I was struck by the irony.

The railroad tracks suggest homeless to me, perhaps the shirt was chosen for something other than the design. Effort to fit in with a group?

Could she have been of mixed race but identified as black and/or was raised by her black relatives? Perhaps her remains were identified as white because her skull had more Caucasian features. In life, she may have been casually viewed as white.

  • #8
Both of those are certainly possible.

She could have been in a relationship with a black man. Or maybe it was just the nicest shirt in the charity bin.

  • #9
true. either it was a donated or found item of clothing, or maybe she hung out around mostly black folk.

All Black Vintage 100% Black Family “It’s A Pride Thing” Tee

Found her shirt again. It looks like some african american pride thing in missouri. Either some club or a band or something.
But in any case I doubt a white girl would wear that if she did not have black family. I am also almost certain she was black or biracial, maybe even white passing but strongly identified with the black community.
You dont pick a shirt with such a strong and specific message from a goodwill bin if you have no connection.

She would not be the first case mislabeled as white by anthropology. It is tricky sometimes if you only have skeletal remains.

This looks to be by the same artist. There aren't a lot of hits on the logo, which is weird but good in a way because that means it was probably not mass produced.

Vintage 100% Black Family T-Shirt
I think I found a closer match for the shirt on poshmark today in white and then this one in black Vintage 100% Black Family "It’s A Pride Thing" Crewneck Sweatshirt I think it would be odd for a white woman to be wearing this shirt in 94. I expanded my inclusions to other races as well. The company that produced the shirt is a Brazilian clothing company called Hering

agree. today on Poshmark I found the same image printed on a white shirt made by Hering. and then this one is on a black fruit of the loom shirt which makes me think these are the designs of a smaller artist that had them printed on what ever stock/bulk shirts they could get their hands on. Vintage 100% Black Family "It’s A Pride Thing" Crewneck Sweatshirt here is the one I found on joint custody and here is where I found it on Pintrest/poshmark

I'm not finding any articles - my archives don't include Little Rock papers - Doe discovery is ~ 50 miles NW of Little Rock.

Highway 64 runs through Morrilton and parallel to the RR tracks.

Interstate 40 also runs through Morrilton and does run parallel to the RR tracks but a little further out than the 1.5 miles indicated.

According to the 1990 census, the population in Morrilton was roughly 6500.

since I can't seem to edit my post I will reply. I've now seen the same image printed on 4 different branded shirts so that makes me think I need to look for the artist that made the design and not the brand of the top which given that she was found in 94 may narrow where she is from. I am guessing a smaller artist that was printing and selling these.
