Samuel Irving, 43, a double amputee bound to a wheelchair, is charged with rape and assault. Irving is a fellow resident of the nursing home.
An orderly at Greenpark Care Center in Fort Greene found the woman unconscious Friday night after noticing that the door to her room was shut.
She was battered and bleeding from her head.
The woman was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with severe head and facial trauma.
The assistant administrator of the care center says the assault was an isolated incident.
"If you know nursing homes, things can happen," said Assistant Administrator Paul Parawan. "You never know with residents, he has never shown any indication whatsoever. He's alert, he's been here with us for almost a year. Never had any incident with him."
