Asian Hate Crime Mapping: Request

Hello there, my name is Jack, AKA Z of the New York Initiative. I was recently on our podcast with Tricia.

This is my first post, and I'm pretty sure I'm staying within the rules, but I'd like to make a request if anyone has time:

I was wondering if anyone had experience with mapping crime by location, time, and detail?

We've recently been approached by a ton of people asking us and forming their own patrol and protection groups, and I'd like to be of some use to them.

My idea is to organize all current Asian hate crimes using details found in the news, and creating a hot-spot map so groups like this both 1. Focus their efforts on the most at-risk areas and 2. Follow up on possible patterns, in case there are serial violent offenders like the recent shooter.

Does anyone have any interest in working with my team on this? The idea would be to start with NYC, and as demand grows move outward to other cities that are experiencing it like San Francisco.

There are a few sites that help compile and geolocate the data. For more exact areas such as city blocks it will require some direct analysis. For instance, a news article might mention "the crime occurred near Trader Joes in Brooklyn" but the tools present to you might only geolocate it to Brooklyn or New York City.​

If you need really specific locations for this, I recommend manual data collection. You can put the geocoord information you accumulate into an excel spread sheet and then convert into a KML or KMZ. You can load this file into Google Earth (free) or ArcGIS (purchase). I can actually help you with this, but I cannot retain the information due to legal restrictions with my work. Private message me on websleuths if you want detailed info on how to plot utilizing KML and KMZ.

Awesome! This article is a great example on why manual data collection is required. The "victim parked his car on Allen St. near E. Houston St. on the Lower East Side ". A coordinate could easily be derived from this location and plotted. This location can then be incorporated into your data.

Example: I was able to geolocate this reported crime using the resources I suggested at ~ <40°43'21"N 73°59'19"W>.

Oh okay. You can access it online without a paid service. I remember seeing the app and it was $20 a month. Definetly a good resource.

If Zedd can afford the time, it might be a good idea to reach out to citizen and see if they can provide metadata for hate crimes against Asian Americans in NYC.

My thoughts: My gut says citizen does not collect the race of every victim (because police don't either). Police normally collect the race of the suspect so they can find and persue them. Police are looking to help victims, not categorize them for pencil pushers like me.

I can't help with mapping. But there is a fantastic Asian reporter for fox 10 in Phoenix by the name of Justin Lum. He might be able to offer resources in collecting the data you seek on Asian hate crimes. He just recently reported on a fatal incident there as well as Asian hate crimes in general.

I appreciate. Thank you everyone. I figured that the mapping would have to be done manually, I probably should have just asked if anyone is available to assist us with this.

I follow up on a lot of stuff with Citizen, it's super useful.
