I've seen first hand the erosion of investigative skills in a general sense. A lot of it relies on the commitment of the investigators to learn and employ traditional gumshoe investigative techniques. I've reviewed so many cases from decades ago I've got a good sense on how those old time investigators approached their cases and have seen how some current investigators often work. Some investigators do a great job. Other investigators try to work the case from behind their desk and (in a way that you're somewhat hinting at) are relying on forensics to come to the rescue. Sometimes they get lucky and forensics works, but there are many cases that require getting out, knocking on doors, talking to people, developing interview skills and following your gut.
