SIAI-Marchetti S.211 Viper 1 in a 2 aircraft “Viper formation” with Viper 2 (VH-DZJ, C/N 002-05-005). Suffered a midair collision over Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, with Viper 2, another SIAS-Marchetti S.211 Marchetti. Viper 1, landed safely at Essendon Airport. Viper 1 made a Mayday call reporting wing leading edge damage and that Viper 2 was in the water, they had observed a splash. Reported 2 POB in both aircraft. Viper 1 landed safely at runway 26 at Melbourne-Essendon Fields Airport (the longer runway of 1,921 metres).
(both planes also took off from Essendon)

Victoria Police said a large part of the body of the plane, which was carrying two people, had been found off Mornington.

Police said they would remove the wreckage from the water before searching the fuselage.

It's understood pilot Stephen Gale and camera operator James Rose were onboard the aircraft when it crashed, after colliding with another plane.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said the two planes were believed to be conducting a promotional film or photo shoot prior to the collision.

RIP Messrs. Gale and Rose.
