It makes sense that both grandparents are being supported by independent lawyers, but in releasing a joint statement, I can't help but think (IMO) that SM and JM have more of an idea than what they'd led LE to believe. It's not uncommon for two people to have differing accounts where one stays accurate to the story and the other starts to get muddy on the (potentially) decided details. And tbh, their decision to finally publicly release a statement now (and not when Gus was originally reported missing) all but confirms that one of them is, in fact, the suspect (though, it's looking like both now).
