Alfio Anthony Granata has been jailed for 17 years after he held a Dutch backpacker a prisoner in he and his 21-year-old girlfriend's Melbourne hotel room, for six weeks. The tourist was made to live in the shower and was beaten - with weapons such as a meat tenderizer - and raped, multiple times.
The tourist was only freed when she tried to kill herself and Granata and his girlfriend, Jennifer Peaston, called emergency services. Peaston escaped conviction in an earlier trial when she was found to also have been abused and traumatized by Granata.
