i dont know its gabberface.com is that an australian website??

i also joined that group

No, i mean is Websleuths hosted in Australia? If it's in the USA (like I assume) they should be about as immune as Facebook is to naming this person.

Also, do Australian police have the power to delete people's Facebook profiles, or do they have to ask (or get a court order) and make the owner of the profile remove it?

Or do they simply call up Facebook on the phone and tell them to remove it?

lol i noticed that too

No websleuths is US site......I say go for it...but we should ask a mod...doing it now.

  • #165
oh sorry indizio i didnt realise you ment this website i believe this website is us based....the police cant do a thing about anyone posting his name because they cant control but ppl put on facebook.

which is bulls@#t because sick people vandilised her tribute pages on facebook the police should be able to do more about facebook

  • #166
good idea mrs g norris i hadnt thought of asking mods if it is ok to post it

People have been charged in Australia before for vandalising tribute pages or profiles of the deceased.

I want to know how the profiles were deleted though.

Both Chantelles, and {mod edit}

It wasn't Facebook who did it. They don't deleted profiles of the deceased.

My beautiful precious sister was tragically killed on the 12th December 2009,which has destroyed and devastated my life, as well as many other people including family friends and work colleagues I have found it totally impossible to remove her page, and have had no support whatsoever from Facebook to do this, it is heartbreaking and cruel as everytime I log on I get messages to contact her or send her a message, If anyone can help me please contact me as I am desperate................

I think police probably went on Chantelle and {mod edit} computers and they just happened to have their password set to "remember me".

My bet law enforcement....they do this often in murder cases, no doubt they're going through it with a fine tooth comb....

Does Facebook know that some Aussie Cops just hacked their server?

Nah, it wouldn't have been anything like that.

Chantelle's profile may have been removed by a friend who knew the password, or by "remember me" being left turned on at her computer.

J.D. may have been asked for his password (court orders can be given to delete Facebook pages) but it would have had to be himself who deleted it, or once again, he left his computer as "remember me".

Very sad and tragic what was done to this family.I feel so bad for the son he lost everyone.I saw how quickly his name was pulled since he is 18 he isn't a minor so why not name him.He committed a very brutal crime I hope your country has the death penalty. He deserves it.

i thought the families deleted the profiles

but jds was deleted and had something to do with court order or something i dont exactly remember what i read so i am trying to hunt it down again

I am sure S.A. Police could subpoena FB though aren't you? Maybe he told his lawyer the password.....either way, the whole thing still 'exists' and can still be used for the case.

Facebook profiles can actually be Completely deleted by the owner now. They don't just go into hibernation.

My brother asked me to delete his page when he was arrested a few years ago. Whoa boy was he getting hate mail. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure law enforcement doesn't delete profiles. Although things seem a tad different over there than here. For the most part though it's a family member taking their name out of the news.

Well hardly anyone knows about it, and no one is commenting on his Bebo. I don't even have a Bebo.
He must not be concerned about it. It doesn't even have any posts since the 4th, and no picture of him and Chantelle.

Remember that "Tribute" group we were posting in last night?

It now says:

WARNING
The offenders name has been subjected to a suppression order. Any person who uses this page to transmit the name could be charged with contempt of court. The page would otherwise be shut down, and nobody wants that to happen. Whether one person knows the name or everyone in the country knows the name is beside the point, it doesn't change the fact that transmitting the name via a medium constitutes an offence. Please exercise some constraint to ensure this page remains open.

Pity Facebook can be anonymous if you don't use your own name, eh?
Even this website is anonymous.
What would they do, look for a musical cat who answers to the Italian word for 'clue'?

The forum administrator is the only one who is able to see IP Addresses.

copied this from the above website reguarding what indizio wrote

Lawyers yesterday warned the unprecedented situation had the potential to upset and influence the case just as it enters its first phase.

"Because Facebook is such an interactive site there could be tens of thousands of people who have access to the name," barrister Craig Caldicott said.

"It may have a huge impact on justice because a potential juror may have access to that information and opinions that have been published.

"Facebook are in breach of the suppression order - it's the company who put it out there."

Civil liberties lawyer George Mancini said it would be very difficult to hold Facebook or its users legally accountable.

"Suppression orders can't be extended to Facebook for obvious reasons because of the nature of Facebook," he said.

"And the question is, even if you did have a law that covered Facebook, could you ever enforce it, because of the sheer anonymity?"
