One of the men jailed for life over the 1986 murder of Anita Cobby has suffered severe injuries after being bashed in Sydney's Long Bay jail.

Gary Murphy was attacked by multiple people in a shower block area, A Current Affair has confirmed.

He sustained severe head and facial injuries.

Murphy remained silent when asked by waiting journalists who asked him if he was sorry or whether he had anything to say to Ms Cobby’s family.

The convicted murderer is being transferred back to Long Bay jail after spending several weeks at hospital after he was attacked by several men in a shower block.

‘The husband of murdered nurse Anita Cobby has admitted he “would have tried something” if he had known he was staying in the same hospital as one of his wife’s killers.

John Cobby made the remark after learning Gary Murphy, 61, was recovering from a prison attack in a secure wing at Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital.

Mr Cobby had been recovering at the Randwick-based hospital after suffering from a chest infection.

“It’s just as well I didn’t know or I would have tried to do something,” he told the Daily Telegraph.
