Trio accused of killing Bruce Saunders overheard discussing 'getting their story straight', court told

Three people accused of killing a Sunshine Coast man whose body went through a woodchipper almost four years ago allegedly concocted a "falsehood" about his death being an accident and were caught on police intercepts talking about "getting their story straight", a court has heard.

The court heard police allegedly had incriminating evidence against the trio, which was picked up in more than "1,000 hours" of surveillance recordings made after Mr Saunders' death, which they are still sifting through.

Lawyers for the three accused argued their clients should be released on bail, citing a lack of direct evidence against them.

Justice Frances Williams denied bail for the trio, telling the court it was a "complicated circumstantial case" and the risk of interfering with witnesses could not be ameliorated.

Jurors deciding the fate of three people accused of feeding a man into a woodchipper will hear 40 hours of secret audio recordings picked up by a bug planted by police.

The accused trio are Gympie man Peter John Koenig, 65, Deception Bay man Gregory Lee Roser, 63, and Sunshine Coast woman Sharon Graham, 61.

Bruce Saunders was crushed by a woodchipper while clearing a driveway at Goomboorian, about 150 kilometres north of Brisbane, in November 2017.

The Brisbane Supreme Court trial will remain listed for 12 weeks, starting on August 15. However, the case will be reviewed again on July 22.

This is terrifying. Any of us could have known one of these people in our day to day lives. Stood in a queue behind them at the supermarket or post office. We could have worked with them. The people who formed some sort of love triangle, and planned and performed this horrible murder apparently lived normal lives until this. People felt safe around them. They behaved like monsters. I'll be very interested to hear about their pasts, if they are convicted. How could this have happened?

I searched as best as I could. The trial(s) apparently started in July/August and there seems to be radio silence on this case since then.

The post I deleted was a google alert that said the trial would start in June.
I thought it must mean next year, but all the other links were from 2021 so I deleted it.

Another article from 2018, interviews with family of Bruce

It has not been confirmed whether Saunders, who reportedly raised the value of his life insurance policy before his death, died in the shredder or was already dead at the time. Whatever the case, “We expect to lay charges,” said Pettiford.

It would be a day that can’t come soon enough for his loved ones, including his son, Blake, with his first wife, Deborah, who died of breast cancer in 2009, and his stepsons, Liam and Nolan.

“Mum has been distraught; it’s been horrible. We just want a resolution,” Liam tells WHO.

“You couldn’t meet a nicer man, he would always welcome you with open arms. He didn’t deserve this.”

So it seems that the trial hasn't started yet, is that right @TootsieFootsie ?

I think that must be right @minusfour

The last I read about a possible trial date was the second half of 2022, and there's only a few months of the year now.

When Bruce Saunders was found in a woodchipper, only his legs were remaining.

But Mr Saunders was dead before his body was fed into the machine after unwittingly becoming embroiled in a "love quadrangle", the Brisbane Supreme Court has been told.

Gregory Lee Roser, 63, and Sharon Graham, 61, are on trial after being charged with the murder of "good natured" Mr Saunders.

When emergency crews responded to a call they found Mr Saunders in the woodchipper at the Goomboorian property.

"All that was left of the body was the legs from about just above the knees down," crown prosecutor David Meredith told the jury on Monday in his opening address.

"The prosecution says Sharon Graham had a powerful motive for wanting Bruce Saunders dead," Mr Meredith said.

Graham had asked Roser to help kill Mr Saunders in a plan that evolved over time, the prosecutor said.

First they planned for Roser to break into Mr Saunders' Nambour house and kill him.

Another plan involved Roser shooting Mr Saunders at his workplace.

Finally they decided to kill him and make it look like an accident, bringing in another man Peter Koenig.

Koenig pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in June 2022, the jury was told.

He is expected to give evidence during the four-week trial, saying Graham asked him and Roser to murder Mr Saunders, Mr Meredith said.

He said Roser was eventually the one who killed Mr Saunders by hitting his head with an iron bar before the body was fed into the chipper.

Wow one of them turned!
