One dead, two injured after stabbing attack on Bourke Street

One person has been killed, and another two injured, after a man went on a stabbing frenzy in Bourke Street, Melbourne, this afternoon.

Video shows a man wielding what appears to be a knife and attacking a group of police officers near the intersection of Swanston Street about 4.20pm today.

The man is then shot in the chest by one of the officers.

Horrific. Awful videos all over social media. RIP to the man not coming home tonight.

why did the car blow up in flames? Why stab people? I bet it ends up as terrorism, in the end.

From your link

Witnesses said the man began randomly stabbing people in the street. Two police officers were on the scene quickly and confronted the man.

Victoria Police said a bomb response unit had been called to the area and was currently making the scene safe.

Police said there was no known link to terrorism.

Thank god the Police were there quickly it could have been much worse.

That car wasn't just on fire, it was exploding with flames. There was some kind of accelerant in the car. Maybe he just innocently happened to have a canister of gas in the car, but I don't believe it is a coincidence.

There are videos all over the web, showing him trying to stab the cops. He does not look like your average motorist in Melbourne, suddenly going nuts. JMO IMO

The Australian understands police will investigate whether the man has links to North African extremism.

The attacker is believed to have been known to security agencies and had links to radicalised members of the Somali community

Several gas cyclinders also exploded inside the vehicle involved in this afternoon’s incident, according to the Herald-Sun.

So there WERE gas cylinders in the car. That's what witnesses said. Watching the videos, the way he aggressively goes after the officers with his long knife, so obviously terrorism.

It doesn't matter what kind of terrorism, but it is terrorism to attack random people on the street to create terror and chaos.

The man, who was originally from Somalia, was known to the police and the incident is being treated as terrorism, Victoria state police Commissioner Graham Ashton said.

Australia cops eye terrorism in stabbing rampage leaving 1 dead, 2 injured

....

The 31-year-old and his family were known to counter-terror agencies at a state and national level and were believed to have ties with north African extremist groups.

His passport was cancelled several years ago after he was noted as one of 300 potential security risks.

It was also noted police are unable to get in touch with the man's wife, and believe she is both missing and radicalised.

The lone wolf attacker, who a witness claimed was yelling 'Allahu akbar' was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but later died from his wounds.
