Divers and rescue crews are headed to Maitland in the Hunter region in New South Wales after two vehicles were swept away in the floods caused by the devastating storms there.

Witnesses watched in horror as the silver hatchback the women were driving was swept from Cessnock Road in Maitland into Wallis Creek, along with another car, about 9am.

Three people from the second car have been rescued and are being treated for hypothermia, but the two people believed to be in the hatchback have not been found.

NSW Police say the hatchback has been swept away and is submerged.

The procession of cars had been following four-wheel drives through the area.

Conditions look terrible from your link, fruity.

Police are now saying the search is suspended as they think there was only one woman in the vehicle. I got the impression witnesses had seen two women in the car though?

Police ask that anyone report anyone they believe might be missing in Maitland straightaway, just in case.

It's been really nasty but the weather is improving now thankfully. As I said in another thread, I am the only member of my family who doesn't live in the affected area. We were lucky enough to get away with some early snow. A lot of my family is without power and very cold, but thankful that they haven't suffered massive damage.
