“A four-month-old baby allegedly slashed in the face by his grandmother is no longer in a critical condition.

The baby boy was underwent surgery on Tuesday and his condition was serious but stable on Wednesday morning, a hospital spokesman told Daily Mail Australia.

Multiple reports said he may be 'scarred for life' after the incident at a home in Brisbane's north-west on Tuesday morning.

Neighbours said the baby and his mother were visiting the boy's grandmother, who lives alone in the quiet and leafy suburb of The Gap.

The child's mother, from Sydney, woke to the sound of her child screaming after 6am, police said.

Horrific. I hope the doctors and plastic surgeons can do as much as possible to help this young boy.

"It was distressing to see such injuries to such a small child," Inspector Bragg said.

This is terribly shocking and sad. The mother and child were visiting from interstate, she heard her baby crying at 6.30 am and found him with severe wounds to the face, the grandmother was standing near the cot with a knife!
Is the grandmother mentally ill, suffering from dementia?! This poor baby boy! His mother must be devastated! :(

Edit: In the video in last link, the reporter said the grandmother missed a therapist's appointment on Monday.

Thank god the baby is stable and hopefully the grandmother receives the care and or services she requires.

This is a really heartbreaking story all around. One of the articles mentioned that the grandmother didn't remember much of the attack, but I'd imagine if she ever does regain that memory, she would feel awful. It doesn't seem like she was a violent person by nature. Of course, being mentally ill doesn't excuse her of responsibility, but it does make this case tragic in more than one way. I hope the baby is able to recover from this and I hope the grandmother gets the help and support she needs.
