As I expected the family are not happy at all with the Under Investigation show............
Hi Everyone,
In light of last night’s episode on the Nine Network’s crime series “Liz Hayes Under Investigation” we’d like as a family to clarify a few points.
From the onset, we were reluctant to be involved in this program for a number of reasons, one of which was we were unsure of how a short panel program could assist us given the complexities of the case.
We are disappointed with what was aired last night. There were a number of factual errors. The program was ill informed and poorly researched. The panel of “experts” was not across every aspect of the case, so therefore shouldn’t be speaking with authority.
We understand the mentality that ‘any publicity is good publicity’ and keeps Janine’s name out there, but it is only helpful when it is presented properly and factually.
We were also disappointed with Liz Hayes victim blaming our beautiful sister by describing her as ‘inebriated’. It was unnecessary, tacky and judgmental. Never should the level of intoxication of a woman who has suffered such a heinous crime be brought up in this way. Also, just to clarify we will never know Janine’s level of intoxication and if it had any influence on her decision to get into the red car.
We’d also like to call out the patronising tones used to describe our family’s own investigation. Most of the new information and leads that have come out publicly over the past six to eight months have been due to our own exhaustive investigation and those who have helped us. We certainly understand our sister’s case more than Channel 9’s panel so we do not appreciate being portrayed as if we do not know what is going on or that we can’t sort rumour from fact.
It is also important to remember, there is much more to Janine’s case than has been made available publicly.
We will never stop investigating Janine’s case. We are eternally grateful to all of the people who have come forward to us with information over the years and we hope that people will continue to do so. We are also working with a team whom we trust and we have a detective who we feel has the best interest of our sister’s case at heart.
We hope, in the future, if anyone is contacted by the media about Janine’s case, that they will first speak with us, so we can discuss whether it is in the best interest of finding justice. This will always be our sole priority.
