Voyeurism? This site is Webslueths. It's a site where concerned people get together to discuss, care, share and possibly help solve. TO THE VERY END.
Since being on Webslueths my rose-coloured glasses have been knocked off my face! Possibly, because of us, Allison Baden Clay has NOT been forgotten and Jill will NOT be forgotten until justice has been done. Loyalty to our sisters perhaps? I've learned there are vicious preditors with mental problems, women who thought they were happily married with 3 children have been murdered, Jill inocently walking home has lost her life. We've nearly learnt who, now hopefully we'll learn how and why. Why? Average people will never REALLY understand.
Awareness of how and why some preditors (can't say humans) do these things. I'm not a voyeur & if I'm to know under what circumstances these precious souls died I may have closure but I'm sure I'll never understand why.

Paul, under what circumstances did you meet Garry Lynch and why did you sit in on the court case? Just wondering but I'd never call you a voyeur. Why did Garry Lynch release that photo of his daughter in the paddock & write the detailed books. I'm sure it wasn't for the voyeurs out there....he had a good reason, maybe to shock others that these things happen & OMG I was shocked, aware and no rose-coloured glasses.

Well said.

Well said they'll get you.
I was young when Anita went missing, even younger when Shan Kingi was murdered. I caught things on the news and from adults discussing the cases. I had heard that these girls had suffered horrifically. I chose and still choose not to read any details about what those animals did to these girls. It has made me aware of these preditors but I did not have to hear the gory details about it to raise my awareness... Just my :twocents:

Hi they'll get you.
1) Garry Lynch and I met via a law and order petition I started after Anita's death in 1986.
I intended to collect signatures in the Blacktown area and it was suggested that I get his approval before doing so...I contacted him and was invited to the family home where a friendship came into being that is still strong today with the family...Anitas sister is now married to my brothers closest friend.
2) As the friendship developed, garry informed me that although his wife Grace and kathryn had a strong female support network in place, all his mates were located in lightening ridge where he used to go opal mining.
He asked if I would come to the westmead and Glebe committal hearings to support him.
I took leave from work (some unpaid) to accompany him to the hearings...I couldnt get time of to attend the trial itself...it was out of compassion.
I wouldnt expect to you to sink as low as to suggest I was doing it out of voyuerism as that would be beneath contempt.....as the family would also tell you.
3)Garry Lynch, the family nor the police ever released a photo of Anitas body in the paddock and I am not aware of any such photo in the public domain...in fact when one of the TV stations showed footage of the body taken from a chopper, they immediately made representations to the station and the footage was never shown again.
Garry wrote one book and it was titled "struck by lightning"...it was an autobiography that had no "detailed' descrption of the acts perpetrated on his daughter...I strongly suggest you have not read the book.
The only other book was authored by Julia Sheppard and it goes into detail about the crime...Garrys did not.
<Mod Snip>I hope I have answered your questions to your satisfaction...i am interested in what level of graphic detail you would like to see published,

Its nothing more than voyeurism FeistyKel...no useful purpose is served

I should have been more specific...I was referring to releasing the details of crimes...injuries etc...

I believe this is where the notion of voyeurism was introduced to the discussion, and can see why some disagree or have been offended by this label.

I agree that explicit details should not be released to the public simply because they are so personal and painful to the people closest to the victim.

I'm also mindful that there may be creeps in the public at large who do actually enjoy reading about gruesome details, and even worse, get ideas from them. I was horrified reading some of the comments on the various fb pages set up in the wake of this tragedy. Some of the posters - men and women alike - were describing in very graphic detail the types of acts they hoped were in store for AB. I know they were written in anger, but they sure had me wondering about what types of individuals could even conjure up such ideas.

Jill's case hit a nerve with an enormous number of people - no doubt because of intense media coverage (and the CCTV was a big part of this - knowing who and what we were seeing), but also without any reference to intimate details of what eventually happened to her.

I respect your response Paul, thank you. I'm not interested in graphic details only how, why & the sentence handed down, TO THE VERY END.

All good...thats what I was talking about when I used the word voyeurism and I apologize for not being clearer...my fault..Im talking about the kind of people that seem to want to almost witness the crime and have every last detail described in its minutia...

Off topic but this may become another tragic case with a young 22 year old woman missing since last seen by her mother on 9/11/2012. Link below -

Unfortunately, a woman's body has been found in the search for Sarah Cafferkey. It is yet to be identified.

ILLUMINATED cab ranks would be installed in Brunswick in a bid to increase safety and reduce violence following Jill Meagher's murder.

All new saftey measures are a great thing, but as a young woman who frequents these areas and around inner melbourne, this is just the tip of the ice berg. For one- It is almost impossible to catch a taxi for a short trip/ fare, in the case of Jill's distance that evening, she would've been hard pressed to get any Melbourne driver to take her that short distance.

IMO Victorian Goverment needs to step up and enforce the law that Taxi's do take ALL jobs, not just the one's that 'suit' them.

Its all good that LE/ others can say- "A Taxi isnt allowed to deny any trip", .. but the truth is.. they do and often! As a result, most people cannot be bothered with the potential 'hassel' and choose to walk/ other means to get home.
Then the other response "Take down their Taxi number and report them".. well after a evening out with fun and drinks.. who is going to be writing down Taxi numbers, whilst trying to beg a driver to take you home with a sharp eye looking for another yellow car that may actually do their job and take you home, in return for the monety you will pay them? *sigh*

I am so frustrated by this, it has been going on for the last 5 years :banghead:

Excellent point about taxis and short trips. They hate it, and DO refuse them - often.

There are a few places overseas where late night entertainment precincts, such as Brunswick, or Kings Cross in Sydney, or the Valley in Brisbane, for example, collectively sponsor minibus shuttle services. I'm not aware of any here in Australia, but if all the club/bar/hotel owners got together and sponsored one or two shuttle buses that would take patrons home within a certain radius - one that would be considered too short for taxis - then I'm sure they would reap far more in custom than the cost of providing the service.

Bit like the free airport shuttles provided by collectives of hotels.

Wonder why nobody has suggested that to the clubs etc in Kings Cross who whinge so loudly about the problem of patrons getting home, resulting in fights at taxi ranks, girls having to find their own way home, and perhaps a lot of people simply not going out as they know they will have problems getting home.

Just a thought....

I'm not sure at all about southern states Doc but majority of leagues, RSL, casinos etc in, at least, Sth Est Qld run late night shuttle buses & have done for years. It would probably come down to the old $$$ factor though for the smaller clubs to start up similar services.

Good point about the RSLs etc Marly. I was thinking more along the lines of a whole bunch of clubs from a recognized precinct such as Kings Cross, or the Valley here in Brisbane. It wouldn't cost them all that much each if they all combined to have one or two shuttles buzzing about between, say, 11pm and 3am. And to restrict trips to a radius of, say 5Km or 10Km - something appropriate for their location but that taxis wouldn't like to do.

Just an idea - maybe not a goer...

Hey DrWatson - was thinking what a great idea this would be :) But ... just realised that being dropped of at home in front of a bus load of fellow drunks mightn't be so wise if there happened to be someone dodgy on board taking note of who lives where. The idea suddenly gave me the creeps. Maybe a bus for female passengers only would work?? I just hear it now ... Oh the inequality!! :)

Yup - very good point. Unless you had a minibus with blacked out windows, then perhaps separate minibuses for males and females. Not just one for females - that WOULD be inequality. But one for males as well, as they are often the ones who start the fights due to having to hang around unable to get transport home.

But segregated buses may work.... oh, the political incorrectness of that suggestion... ;)

Musician Sharon Shannon has announced two benefit gigs in Melbourne to honour murdered Irishwoman Jill Meagher.

The Sharon Shannon Band will perform at The Spotted Mallard, in Brunswick, on Friday 11 and Saturday 12, January.

Shannon has said that a third of all proceeds from both performances will be donated to the Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA), “as a tribute to Jill’s life and enduring spirit”.

A spokesperson for CARA said the organisation – the peak body of 15 Centres Against Sexual Assault in Victoria – was “really grateful” for the planned donation.

“I think it’s a fabulous gesture for somebody to donate to the victims of sexual assault or to [the memory of] somebody who’s been raped and murdered,” said Carolyn Worth.

Ms Worth added that the gigs would raise awareness of the centres’ work with sexual assault victims.
