I can't help but think how harrowing Kumanjayi Little Baby's last moments / hours/ days were, not being able to scream for help in the middle of the night......

What a coward to do this to a poor innocent 5 yr old girl.

I wonder if this suspect has his own children?
I don't think non-verbal means she couldn't scream.

Did she die where she was found, and is it thought to have been the same night?

Yes. Did she never learn to speak because nobody spoke much to her, only the ipad?

I doubt it, considering she used hand gestures to communicate - someone clearly spent the time learning to communicate this way with her.

A 2020 literature review of Autism in Indigenous Australians states: "Indigenous Australians experience disability at a rate more than 1.5 times that of the general Australian population and are twice as likely to have a severe or profound form of disability" - link

While it might not be Autism that caused her to be non-verbal, Aboriginal people have higher rates of poor health outcomes and disabilities due to a wide range of societal factors. Implying she wasn't cared for is just unhelpful speculation that does not align with the community rule around being victim-friendly when speaking of victims and their families.

Agree. It's a common misconception that non-verbal means no sounds at all.
There's a movement towards saying pre-verbal now, rather than non-verbal. As quite often these children will make sounds and noises, maybe the odd word. Moo

Heartbroken for this little girl. Hope she gets the justice she deserves.

According to the quote in this article, he does have his own family. :(

A source close to both families said they were 'flabbergasted' that Lewis is thought by police to have allegedly committed such a heinous crime, despite his long list of violent convictions that have seen him in and out of jail over the past 10 years.

'He is a husband and a grandfather. Everyone is in shock,' the source said.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that the suspect had children in Western Australia, but I can’t find it now. I can only find reference to him having family ties in Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Mr Lewis is known to have links to a number of remote outback communities in the NT and WA.”

Thanks everyone and modsp for respecting Aboriginal culture and the family's wishes to refer to this sweet little girl now as

Kumanjayi Little Baby

So devastating, to the family of this baby my heart breaks for you. This was an absolutely heinous act on a tiny innocent girl. Prayers for Kumanjayi Little Baby.

“NT Police have also reached out to neighbouring states, with WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch confirming his officers had attended Balgo, a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley, where Lewis’ wife lives.”

I just can't with these precious sweet innocent children anymore 😢 my heart 💔 breaks a little more with every story here. Someday justice will be meted down and I am not sad to say I am anxiously waiting for a ring side seat

Fly high sweet Little Baby - you deserved so much more 👼

Ugh how anyone can harm a child so easily without even batting an eye or giving it a second thought, I will never understand, nor do I want to understand.

Oh no. May she rest in peace.

For those curious why the hard switch, I did a little reading. Australian Aboriginal cultures have a hard taboo on using the name or image of the dead to avoid disturbing their spirit. Kumajayi is a placeholder name used for people who have died.

Thank god they got him. I hope he lives in fear every day in prison for the rest of his miserable life.

He probably turned himself in. Aboriginal justice is harsh.

I think there is more to the arrest. (Paraphrased)

A vigilante group tracked him down and beat him up.
He was rushed to Alice Springs hospital late tonight - just before 10pm.
A group found him at Charles Creek camp and beat him up, then called the police.
Then about 100 people gathered outside the hospital, throwing rocks, yelling, telling police to bring him out.

Kumanjayi Little Baby was found at the edges of the (dry) Todd River.
The police shielded her from the media with blue tarpaulins as they removed her.

Police say they will issue an update tomorrow.
