I think Mr Walsh was trying to deflect publication of what he knew was coming up, when he gave his little court steps spiel about a clairvoyant and a 99 year old witness (releasing evidence).

He had already arranged for Dawson to go into the police station after his not guilty plea and be arrested and bailed on historical charges. Probably was hoping he could sneak Dawson in and out with no fuss, and that maybe the press wouldn't catch wind of the historical charges so quickly and blast them all over their MSM pages.
Maybe hoping that the evidence he released on the court steps about the murder trial would take precedence in the MSM publications, as the journos rushed back to get that story out. (Weak story that it is.)

It is all about manoeuvering and manipulation with these people. imo

I do wonder if, had Dawson pled guilty to the murder, so saving the public purse of time and money, doing the decent and honorable thing, if the DPP would have held off with the extra charges.... but no. . Go right ahead, Dawson, I'll see your not guilty and raise you Carnal Knowledge of a minor.

It is heartening to see the DPP in the game after 30 years of piffle and bumble about Lynn's murder.

The Dawson family must be leaking money like a sieve. .. how very apt, considering this murder of Lynette Dawson was primarily about money, her money that he saw as his, her spending which he saw as sabotage of his ego, her streak of independence in getting her own Bankcard, and then having the actual nerve to use it,..

His determination to scoop the pool, hold all the aces, run the show and be in charge . Their peer group commented on the meanness of the brothers, they never shouted a meal or a drink, such an unAustralian habit, and it must have been a bit of a annoyance for rugby friends to remember it and mention it.

I think it might be someone else, as well. Joanne has a child born in wedlock with him, then divorced him, and has assisted in providing evidence for Dawson's arrest for Lyn's murder.

I think these things could prejudice any court case of historical sex charges.

And what would it do if she was called as a witness in Dawson's murder trial? Would it prejudice her testimony there, as well? "Don't you have a current case against Mr Dawson? Are you out to get him?"
A charge of carnal knowledge, that's a criminal matter. The victim/witness doesn't have a "case against" the accused. Though Joanne may have a civil case against CD in addition. The references to Maurice Blackburn potentially representing half a dozen victims, those would be civil cases.

I think it will be suggested at the murder trial that Joanne is "out to get" CD and therefore an unreliable witness, in any case. I don't think testifying against him in relation to a carnal knowledge charge is necessarily going to weaken her credibility. It might help. You can imagine defence counsel denouncing the scurrilous rumours about a man of unspotted character . . . none of the fantasy victims willing to stand up and support charges, because it would be perjury, etc.

Also I suspect the threat of carnal knowledge charges was used to attempt to pressure CD to plead guilty. The charge was all ready to go and they held off until he'd formalized his not-guilty plea.

yes at the time it seemed so laughable what he was suggesting but now we know what he had ahead that day likely was just banking on the media running with the first story.
stall tactics....
lol a whole hour or two.:D

love to know how much notice the defence had this was coming yesterday.

Hallelujah, praise the lord! It’s happening at last. ( I haven’t converted, hubby and I on a music/concert hopping tour in mid USA atm. Gospel and blues the last few days):)
Anyway, at the Bravehearts Q&A I attended earlier this year, from the innuendo and general feeling, I came away extremely confident that there would be more charges (plural). Let’s hope Police are stockpiling them, I’m sure this won’t be the end.
Then let’s see the testosterone driven twin wiggle out of this one. Not so funny now CD.
The woman who appeared with Hedley that day was a former student and she spoke of how CD would lock staff room doors with girls inside, drive students in his car etc...so plenty of opportunity for sexual activities and I bet he was not asking for birth certificates for proof of age.
All IMO and MOO
No birth certificate needed - they were teachers and should be able to look up students birthdates, easy as! No excuse.

What I fear is, if the other twin was really as smart as his wife thinks, he might actually check every girl's age, and wait till they were 17 before he pounced. Arbitrary age distinction, when it comes to students in one's class, but he might then be out of trouble.

Working within the Australian education sector, I can state that romantic relationships between teachers and students, regardless of the student's age, are deemed inappropriate for many reasons, not the least of which is that the teacher is an authority figure. In many schools, teachers will only accept a friend request from a student on social media if the student has not been at the school for 2 years. However, this is now. The rules would have been different in earlier times. Interesting article for current reference....

I was at secondary school in the 1980s in Victoria and sex between teachers and students did happen. I know that the deputy principal took a stern view of it, prowled about making his presence felt when a particular teacher talked to students at school but outside class. I would say as students generally we had a tolerant if not exactly approving view of the thing. At the time I thought the deputy principal was being weird. Anyway, the teacher changed careers a short time after I left the school. I don't know whether this conflict had anything to do with it.

All of the girls at high school simply drooled over one or two of our teachers ... so young (ish), so nice, so good looking, and single.

The teachers never spent a second encouraging anyone. They had decent morals. I don't think it mattered what the law/policy was or wasn't. They simply were not going there. Good people.

Yes SA, we had a male teacher at my Catholic girls school for a term. He was debonair, wore a hunting jacket, smoked a pipe and chewed gum. We all had a massive crush on him. He never encouraged anyone, had decent morals and never went there.

I was sent to an all girls boarding school, and every week in spring and summer a young man would haul himself up, dressed in Yakka shorts and shirt, on to the tractor and mow the hockey fields, while those of us lucky enough to have a window seat gazed out at him, up a row, down a row, while we all , in silence, fell under his magic .

That was the extent of our sexual education and also of our interaction with the opposite sex of any sort. Once a year , our brothers , firmly settled in the masculine example of the school, invited us and our fellow classmates to a Tea Dance, under the beady eyes of very cranky teachers.

Still, the education itself was tops, but.... you know... it could have done with a bit of lightening up, but not Cromer grade.. oh no.. noooooo

I have been waiting to see what The Australian says about these historical charges, seeing that they are the initiators (and owners?) of the podcast. Here are some snippets .... (it also speaks about his not guilty plea for the murder charge, and how his lawyer released "selected" parts of the evidence on the court steps outside afterwards, with a spokesperson from the Law Society refusing to comment on his lawyer releasing evidence).

"Former star footballer Chris Dawson was charged yesterday with a sex offence against a 16-year-old girl when he was a teacher on Sydney’s northern beaches, within hours of pleading not guilty to murdering his wife."

"Detectives from Strike Force Southwood charged the 70-year-old with carnal knowledge.
The strike force was established last July to investigate allegations in The Australian’s podcast series The Teacher’s Pet of sexual assaults and student-teacher relationships at northern beaches schools in the 1970s and 1980s."

"NSW police say the investigation is ongoing, raising the prospect that further charges could arise against either Mr Dawson or other teachers."

"The Australian understands at the time it was an offence punishable with up to 14 years’ imprisonment for teachers to have sex with female students under 17."

"Former Cromer High School vice-captain Robyn Wheeler was the first to raise concerns in the podcast about teachers preying on students.
“I’m delighted that women who were girls at the time are now being heard and taken seriously,” Ms Wheeler said yesterday."

"Law firm Maurice Blackburn has been instructed to act for six people over allegations of historical abuse at schools on Sydney’s northern beaches, The Australian revealed last month."

"Police had arranged with the man’s lawyers for him to be brought to the police station after a court appearance earlier in the day, he said."

"Mr Walsh yesterday twice asked for Mr Dawson’s bail to be varied so he could visit his stepson and another family member on the Gold Coast."

Teacher’s Pet case: Chris Dawson on teen sex charge - Friday, June 21, 2019
BBM.

I got a laugh from this comment about visiting his stepson and another family member on the Gold Coast. Does he think that anyone was stupid enough not to know his twin brother lives on the Gold Coast. Paul is just "another family member" now.

Well, when is this 'other family member' going to be charged.
Pleased he must be on edge, waiting....
Great all this money, collected over the years, is now paid to the attorneys.
No nest egg will be left.
MOO.

Agree.

But the thing that gets me, why on earth should Dawson's bail be varied so that he can go visiting? He was given strict bail conditions for a reason, as all people awaiting an appearance for murder should be given.

If his 'Gold Coast family' want to see him, they can always hop in the car and go see Dawson. If they are unable to do that, for whatever reason, FT/Skype/similar will give them the visual feeling. Kazillions of us who live away from loved ones do that.

I hope his bail was not varied.

Agree Agree Agree.

Folks of his age usually just move around their local area, and occasionally visit friends and family farther away. Bail conditions would equate normal life if he's given just that.

His "Gold Coast family" already goes to visit him, I bet. He is just looking for more excuses to get away. Sneaky as always.

There's a fresh twist in the case of Lynette Dawson, as her former husband Chris fights allegations he killed her. Police have a new line of inquiry, centering around an elderly couple claiming they saw her in 1984 - two years after she allegedly went missing

So, as I understand it, Lyn Dawson walked into the hospital room where the man was recovering then quickly walked out again (because she recognized him too?) And the next day his wife saw her at the nurses' station. Are they implying she was working at the hospital?

I presume so. I don’t suppose Lyn would’ve have been there visiting. Who would have told her Chris had been admitted to the hospital anyway? I often doubt sightings such as this. If the neighbours thought the woman was Lyn, why didn’t they approach her?

They said they didn't know she was missing. It seems they can't have known her very well. And if that's the case, why approach her?

I didn't pick that up about Chris--was he in the same hospital room?
