Ah, it's looking like it was around the corner of Kent and Market Street - getting closer - the 396 Kent Street of Le Courrier is right near the corner of Market. The newspaper stand in Pitt Street was only a short walk. My obsession continues .........
I too, was obsessed with finding that damn coffee shop. There were a couple of clues in his ramblings.
1. He said he'd go to the news stand on the corner of Pitt & Market during his break.
2. The 'entrance' to the coffee shop was off Market St. which could mean it was in an arcade or lane way.
3. He claimed the owner of Le Courrier Australien came to the shop regularly. The office of that newspaper was in Kent St, about 4 city blocks away from Pitt St. Quite a stroll for a cup of coffee!
I gave up in the end.
The office of Le Courrier Australien was at 389 George Street until October 1973 when it moved to Kent Street.

Another sleuth posted about this some time back. I cant remember who sorry. It was worth looking into it and sits with Adolph Pauls who is also connected to this story....
I remember the name Adolph Pauls coming up here but I didn't pay too much attention.....Ye Old Crusty Cellar (later Tavern) what would be the odds? So many possible connections!

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned recently but this might be of interest to websleuths. There's an American podcast called "The Prosecutors" which has just put out an episode about Marion's disappearance. Well worth a listen. I found it interesting as they've distilled a lot of information so it's a good reminder/overview (although I noticed a few a details which are not 100% accurate). And just a heads up that the presenters' style can be both jokey and serious, so there were a few times that I felt they were being a bit flippant (but I may be particularly sensitive to that as I feel so invested in finding out what happened to Marion).
Anyway, it's The Prosecutors episode 127: The Disappearance of Marion Barter Part 1 of 2 - Who's That Lady?

Thank you, @Penguinpoet. I started listening, then almost turned it off. I'm glad I stayed with it. It's a clean recap. When Marion's story is told in a straight line, it all seems so clear. ie. Wonka's involvement. I look forward to the end of the 2nd episode when the two prosecutors offer their opinions.

@centred Yes, I found the earliest reference to "Ye Olde Crusty Cellar" was by @mishy66 back in Thread #10. I even started reading some of the earliest threads of this forum and there seems so many sleuths who have dropped out but had submitted interesting facts and thoughts. 6 SLEEPS TO GO!!

yes I have done the same at times , there are many posts and links relative to this link and a lot of information shared and linked by others and are sometimes being rehashed but are now lost in the mist along with many sleuths . Most of what has been covered back in earlier threads except for the well researched genealogies haven't always been followed up .

So yes I am now waiting until next week for any further comment

This is interesting to me @Viveka
Given he is here 1969 / 1970 with IK

I found a place that I feel sits with the cafe scene he would be use to ..
Lincoln Coffee Lounge & Cafe, Rowe Street, Sydney - John Barry, proprietor

Vanished Sydney

It was demolished in the early 1970's - it is about a 4 min walk from the Le Courrier in George Street.
I found it was situated at 51 Rowe Street - behind Australia Hotel

The photographs of the 1950s are really something!

There is also Jericho’s upstairs restaurant in Rowe Street - a fav with students

Another good possibility @Itsapuzzle. Located just 1 door down from Market St and possibly with rear access to Market via a corridor. Ad published in 1959.
Alexanders was still trading in 1993 under different management, so the coffee lounge was around for about 30 years.

Image is a little hard to read but google translation of an article from Belgian paper re WW. What stood out to me is using a vacant lot to hide stolen goods (pipes…not sure why they wanted to steal pipes). Wonder if Tambourine lots were used to bury/hide treasures.

SCHOOL ROBBERY - Joseph Deprez 20 living on Ernest Solvey Boulevarde in Liege and Willy Wouters 18 living in 33 rue Haute Marexhu, Herstal appeared on Monday before the Criminal Court...4 days later, together with Wouters, they broke into a house under construction in Herstal and stole 70 kilos of lead pipes and copper fittings worth 3,500 francs. Wouters was not involved in the previous school robbery and received 5 mths. All three having no previous criminal records received a 5 year reprieve (good behaviour bond)

He seems to like burying things (like jewellery in plumbers pipes) doesn't he? Lord knows what he might have buried at Tamborine when he was allegedly performing weed eradication in Nov 81.

If I wrote this story as a crime novel, no publisher would take it seriously! It just becomes more unbelievable with each new piece of the puzzle. It's a shame the policeman wasn't a better shot. Just 4 days to go!

Maybe pipes were for counterfeiting coins! Make them from lead, coat them with copper?

Don’t know if this is the case in every country, but in Belgium you can ‘sell’ scrap iron copper lead zinc to wholesalers. There are people who pick it up at homes & businesses for a living. We even have loads of cars with a soundsystem on the roof blasting through the streets that they’re around to pick it up…
I remember a few years ago they got so much money for copper that they were stealing from businesses & even traincables (so some trains couldn’t do their route). So it isn’t that weard in Belgium stealing copper, lead,… pipes i’m afraid.

Similar in UK. What I don't really get is that RB could join the Gendarmerie when he already had a criminal record? Presuming this is the same WW that later becomes RB and dates tally etc.

I'm glad you listened to it. You're right - the timeline seems very clear from that podcast when you hear it distilled like that.
I'm in the camp that thinks that it was Marion who came back to Australia, so hearing a clear summary of the key timings really brought in to focus for me the date of Owen's birthday (so close after the final lump sum of money being withdrawn) and how I suspect sadly she was no longer alive by his birthday.
IMO

That makes sense. Seems like a dirty/unsophisticated crime given WW talent at deception. But I guess he was a lot younger then.
