Not a legal expert just my opinion -

There are many crimes he could / should be charged, held accountable for but -

1. lying on his citizenship application - this would be easy to prove, and I assume easy to revoke but the result would be deportation and then he could not be charged with crimes committed in Australia
2. Defrauding Australian social welfare - up to 10 years imprisonment
3. Fraud against the women in Europe - that would need to be trialed by the EU courts as that is where the crime took place - they would need to deport him and then he wouldn't face any Australian charges.
4. Marion - there is no body and the paper trail is long gone - all circumstantial evidence which if you have enough can lead to a conviction, but I wouldn't think they have enough just from what we know, but hopefully they have or will find something more concrete.

It would not surprise me if there is some politicking going on - the Aus Government would probably like to export "the problem" on the grounds he lied on his application and let him be someone else issue, because that is the cheapest and quickest way to deal with this Vermon. But there is alot of public interest in the case, if they deport him, they can't get him for Marion and that could cause backlash.

Personally, I would like to see both of them charged with Welfare fraud and shoved in prison - we are not going to get anything else out of them while they are free so they may as well be under lock and key. I would hope prison life would encourage DH to talk to save herself and help solve the MB case.

All just my opinion
Thank you KiwiNZ. Great points. I also worry about whether there are recent victims. Re his reference to ‘thousands of women online’ at the inquest. (paraphrasing/from memory). Such a shame computers/phones couldn’t be ‘inspected’ by authorities. Agree with you re accountability to Centrelink. Particularly after watching some of the robodebt enquiry! Just my humble opinion of course.

Finally! Anyone know if Aussie media is allowed to publish the same article? Very powerful visual. Could jog some memories.

I have just written to the Aust Broadcasting.

IT IS RIDICULOUS THAT THE PRESS IS NOT COVERING HIS ALIASES~!!!

Willy Coppenolle - your day is fast approaching!

  • #130
REAL NAME - Willy / WILLIAM COPPENOLLE

Lets do Australias press release for them!!!

They seem as inept as the NSW police in their job!

Diane / Dianne maintained she had never heard Willy Coppenolle using the name FREDY DAVID - here she is standing right beside him with his alias given to the newspaper at the time as Fredy David - funny that.

As much as it’s not funny, I can’t help but find his aliases laughable. Some of them remind me of when you’re forced to change a password and can’t quite be bothered. I’m expecting him to call himself Willy Wouters1! Freddy de Hedervary$123

On the blonde hair being perhaps like his mother, there’s a few pics of him where he’s looked as though he might be emulating an older blonde woman himself.

Sorry I know I have harped on about this person DCOD for a long time but I wanted to revisit it all again as I have found some more information on him. He also had a few aliases.

The link to Desire Charles Octave David was originally found by @KittensAugustus and the story was so aligned to the present 'Willy Coppenolle", I couldnt stop researching him.

There are lots of links to him here if you do a search.

But here is a summary:
The history of a French swindler by the name of Desire Charles Octave David ( Not Maria C 1st husband because there is a 10yr birthdate difference)

Here is a summary of what I found back then.

Desire Charles Octave David ~
Wounded war hero
Placed advertisements to find woman
Fraudster
Womaniser
Professional Dancer / gigolo
Flitting all over Europe - especially Amsterdam France & Germany
Accomplices - sister and Mistress - who helped choose victims for him
Passing himself off as a member of a rich noble family
Claimed disabled to work – living off the riches of the women
Born in November 1895, son of a school teacher, twice wounded during the war, charged in 1926 with espionage and fraud for the benefit of Germany. Claimed in the Reich while he had taken refuge in Dusseldorf, he was extradited and tried on the charge of fraud. His accomplice was his sister and his Mistress. ( I have since found a lot of information on her too)

1934 – DCOD goes to jailed – He changes his name after the scandalous Trial
and after the trial he has no footprint...name changed....? He dies in 1972 under DD

One newspaper clipping claimed he had 7 wives and his long term Mistress - Mathilde Tadieu

"1915, during a convalescence in Pont-Saint-Eaprit, he obtained the hand of Mademoiselle Fournier, daughter of a wealthy merchant from Varenne-Saint-Hriaire. The parents had not without resistance, consented to this marriage, But Mademoiselle Fournier loved the brilliant Officer. It seems that she was the only one to love, while the brilliant lieutenant's career was willing to disperse.
It was much worse when, seriously wounded at Malmaison, placed on standby, then reinstated Désiré-Octave David was returned to civilian life. Until then he had contented himself with cashing in on his father-in-law's coffers. He will now embark on a series of extravagant undertakings by presenting himself as the partner of his father-in-law, by manufacturing fake coins to make people believe in this association, by falsely signing a bill of francs in his father-in-law's name….by claiming for millions that he does not have from a famous brand of chocolate, which will earn him 125,000 francs....
So much so that his wife ends up divorcing and his father-in-law by filing a complaint. From which David was by no means dismounted. He only set his sights on other victims."

REMIND YOU OF ANYONE????!!!!

Married again 1930:
She met David in Rennes. He left the prison of this city without her knowing it. "I thought I was marrying a seriously wounded soldier. I married a habitual criminal, me, the daughter of a lawyer and mother of 1 girl. It shows David stealing her jewelry and titles, then stripping the very wasteland of friends she had. Madame Deloustal gets up and pointing to David, exclaims: "That scoundrel is stealing everything." He even stole a gun from me and maybe that's why he's still alive. And my name was Mrs. David, I was the wife of that crook. I am the daughter of a lawyer, my father would never have treated a woman as you treat me".

At Hotel d'Orsay where he had settled, he had a secretary to whom he had promised 3,000 francs monthly salary and a typist at 450 francs.....
David had something better in hand, Renee Gaudin known as Augustina, his senior by six years. Mother already of a girl, but friend of a rich Greek commission agent, who had gifted her money and tens of thousands of dollars in jewellery.
From the Hotel d'Orsay, David and Renee Gaudin set out for Lyons where they took up residence there. The taking of possession of her wealth was such that Renée Gandin did not hesitate to confide to David her treasure as she believed him to be a millionaire, her jewels locked away in a safe.
When Renee Gaurdin returned to Paris, her briefcase contained nothing more than a stuffed animal of fur worth 25,000 francs, and the false jewels with which David had replaced because the real ones were sold by him.
When she confronted him he told her the briefcase had been stolen and found on the railway tracks, he had nothing to do with it.

REMIND YOU OF ANYONE!!!???

His fourth victim was Mademoiselle Helene Fournoux, who answered David's advertisement for a Secretary.
She fell in love with him........

Desire David's accomplices were his sister Elise David and his girlfriend Mathilde Tadieu - she came from a prestigious family who were surprised to find out she had been involved.......they were all arrested in Passy and jailed.

REMIND YOU OF ANYONE!!!???

And a bookshop owner, Helene Spiegel, joined the queue of complaints.

Released on bail, David strategically married Alice Dazel, daughter of a high judicial official, who gave evidence

that David had turned out a model husband and father.

@KiwiNZ Thanks for your non-legal rundown. Seems very complete. RE: #3 . . .I've watched enough documentaries and listened to enough podcasts to know that this kind of fraud is very hard to prosecute -- unless there's bodily harm. Conartists are experts at getting victims to agree to things which give the perp enough leeway to rob and steal. It's he said vs she said. This is one of the things that is so damn aggravating.

I can only see this bit that I used Google translate on. The rest is behind a paywall.

Born in Tournai, victims as far away as Australia: the story of the elusive Belgian master con artist

"A quarter of a century after the Australian teacher Marion Barter (51) mysteriously disappeared, the trail leads to a Belgian master con artist. A criminal who left behind a trail of deceit, theft, seduction and deception under no less than thirty aliases in numerous countries, according to research by our newspaper in collaboration with two Luxembourg colleagues. He stripped at least two Belgian women financially. Will he remain elusive in his old age?"

Is anyone able to access the online version and provide a translation please?

The translated version shows a box to sign up and read. I'm not sure if it means for free.
I don't want to try it.

Trying to post the translated page but it won't let me.

Anyway just above the box at the bottom, the translated version says:

Reading without a subscription?
Sign up and read ' Born in Tournai, victims as far as Australia: the story of the elusive Belgian master con artist"
Then the box to put your email address in.

I can't see the whole page, just the translated bit that I posted.
I'd love to read the whole thing and am tempted to put my email address in.

But not if that means I'm signing up to pay :)
