Education.
What defines an education?
I think its one's own personal definition of what they deem as "being educated".
Finishing High School ? Going to University? Continuous lifelong University degrees?


Many of the worlds greatest achievers and inventors never had a formal education. Some never even finished Junior Level.
Edison barely even went to school.

One definition is:
"An educated person is characterized by a strong foundation of knowledge, critical thinking skills, and a curiosity for learning and understanding the world around them. They possess the ability to analyze information, make informed judgments, and apply knowledge to solve problems."

For me, that sums him up perfectly.

He is educated, he is worldly, he is well read and he is cunning. His whole life has been an education. An educated criminal, born during WW2 with relatives that knew how to create fraudulent documentation and one who was far too smart to be caught for his crimes..

We DO KNOW that he spoke and understood many languages.
Dutch, French, German, Italian, Hungarian.


MC family were Dutch speaking.
For me at least, with the belief his father was RC, I know RC wife was and spoke Italian - I've no doubt there are others he was associated with that spoke Italian, names that havent been mentioned this far.
IK spoke no English when she arrived in Aust - He would have know Hungarian to translate for her.
His passport is renewed in Germany.
DdeH sister married into a German speaking family.
Swiss Mrs Z, his victim, and her husband spoke both French and German.
Mrs Z and AH spoke French when she went to sell her stamp collection.

He lived in these countries, visited these countries. Victims of these countries.

Hmm what about his flowery poetic letters and romantic overtures? The singing testicles etc?

It is possible he speaks many languages on a base level, in the same way that a market stall holders catering to groups of international tourists can. He also seems to have several languages just by dint of birth and location over time which is about luck and circumstance over education. However, he clearly fancies himself as literate and educated, so this is where some form of studying or reading may propel him - he did after all tell the judge that he was 'not right in the head maybe because of all the books I've read' ... or something similar, I paraphrase.

He's probably read a fair few books in prison or whilst holed up on his travels biding time, it's what people used to do before the internet, tried his hand at writing classes and called himself a poet or lyricist now and then. Seems the type.

Speaking of Mrs Z victim, reminded me of the various Religious Movements and Cults that have been associated with this case.
Incredible really when you look at just how many people linked to this case, are involved with or have been involved with various Evangelist / Cult / Charismatic Movements.

Marion herself was connected to, through various peoples observations, to Scientology, United Church of God which was an offshoot of Wide World of God, Herman Far East Shining
So she obviously had some interest in the Evangelist side of Spiritual growth it seems.

The Scientology side of things has always interested me because of their connection to Hubbards Headquarters at St Hill Manor in Sussex, which is now the Scientology Museum and of course its connection to Tunbridge Wells.

Scientology began operations in Belgium in 1972, and had been through the courts for alleged fraud, tax evasion and forgery. Seems a perfect bolthole for a criminal.

Hubbard said, "THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM..., because the second you start telling anybody close to the truth, you start releasing him and he gets tougher and tougher to control." - Technique 88


Some of his victims were also involved with these various Religious Movements of Enlightenment.
Mrs Z and husband were another couple who possibly had a belief system similar, which I think was through the teachings of Mirra Alfassa.

I thought it strange at the time, he gave her that book by Alice Bailey, but not now. Now things are much clearer.

We know from previous posts and the work done by KiWi, Alice Bailey's teachings were connected to various Bali events run by astrologers and metaphysical teachers Alan Oken and Maggie Kerr, along with Komang Astawa, who joined some of their events. Maggie having a house in Bali and
of course being based on the Gold Coast, now calling herself Universal Maggie.

Hi all, I’m relatively new to this case havinh not long finished the podcast The Lady Vanishes and ofcourse as you all know it is one massive head-scratcher.

I know you all discussed 1895 Desirè David back in 2022 but I feel the need to bring this guy back into the chat for many reasons and I’ll try to explain why.

I’ve been doing a good bit of research on him and the more I find out about him the more I do think he’s Ric’s dad OR if he’s not ric’s father, there is definitely a connecting link between them, but I’m leaning towards father and son.

In 1918 he leaves the French Army in which he says he had achieved the rank of lieutenant. He leaves because he claims to have been extremely badly injured by being gassed. He marries a Rose Fournier and in December of 1918 Rose has a baby, they call her Jacqueline Adrienne Elise David.

Sometime in 1919 Desirè along with his sister Jeanne Marie Elise David steal an expensive necklace from a Madam Gaudlin who is residing in a hotel in Paris. They at first claim that the necklace has gone missing while Elise was transporting it along with some other of Madam Gaudlin’s items.

Desirè goes on the run and in 1921 Rose divorces him. Also in1921 a Mr Sulzberger loses his passport in Paris and he takes out an advert in a parisienne newspaper asking for it to be returned and offering a reward.

Fast forward to 1925 and a Mathilde Tardieu gives birth to stillborn twins. Several months after that she’s arrested and on her person the French police find several documents which are questionnaires for her to fill out about the French military (including info about gasses and poisons they use), and a love letter from Desirè David.

Mathilde goes to prison for about 2 years. She asks if she can keep Desire’s letter, the police tell her no. A man called Maurice Charton is also sentenced for his part in the same thing.

Desirè is caught using Mr Sulzberger’s passport in a hospital in Düsseldorf, he’s arrested and the French want Germany to extradite him back to France, Germany refused and agreed to send him back on theft charges instead.

This is where his story gets quite confusing, because the Sulzbergers’ hotel room gets broken into and a lot of valuables are stolen around this same time. Also around this time Desirè meets Mrs Sulzberger and she seems quite taken with him so off she goes gallivanting around Nice with him. He runs up a big gambling debt and her ring is broken so he offers to have it fixed so she gives it to him. He sells her ring and flees, she ends up paying the gambling debts. Her hotel room it seems to get broken into again, someone makes off with a lot of hers and her husband’s belongings.

Forward to about 1930 and Ric marries a Claire DeLoustal. She lived in Marseille, he brings her to Paris and abandons her there. Claire divorces him a few months after the wedding.

1932, David’s child Jacqueline died at The Seine. I don’t know how she died, she was 14. Desirè marries a lady called Jeanne Lucile Alice Gazel, though in a lot of reports she’s mistaken for a Leocadie Gazel. Alice gives birth to a baby in either 1932 or 1933 and Desirè and Elise end up in court in 1933.

Alice defends Desirè saying he’s a changed man since she had the baby. The court case is postponed until 1934 and before Alice can take the stand again she suddenly dies. Once again the reporters mistake her for Leocadie Gazel, probably because both Leocadie and Alice’s fathers were judges and Leocadie also died around the same time.

The case in question is The Don Juan Of The Sleeping cars, basically he went on overnight trains with his sister Elise and there was one more defendant (who is hinted at in the press at the time, but weirdly not named). They swindled money and jewellery off women who were travelling alone on these trains.

Desirè seems to disappear when he gets jailed in 1934.

I am trying to find out what Alice’s baby born in 1932/33 was called but I’m having no luck, I’m also trying to find out who the third defendant was in the sleeping car trial. Desirè supposedly married 7 times between 1918 and 1933.

So I want to talk about Ric ‘copying, or mirroring’.

The poetic love letters, Desirè was caught because of one, Ric prevented himself getting caught by asking for his letter back, the scamming women, Jacqueline’s death and Ric’s alleged attempt to kill Evelyn, the many wives, wives or ex wives dying suddenly.

Using other people’s real identities, travelling on a passport that didn’t belong to him/ didn’t bare his name.

Ric took women travelling and told them to invest in this and that, Desirè scammed women in exactly the same way.

The orient Express, was it really Marion’s idea, or did Ric want to re-enact his father’s sleeping car train scams? I have a theory that it was Ric pushing the Orient Express idea.

Desirè and Ric both lived in places called Le Passy. Desirè lived in Le Passy, Paris, Ric lived in The Passy in Australia.

Both men had an interest in poisons.


Having said all that, while going through one of Desirè’s weddings today, I happened to notice that one of the witnesses was a man called Richard Bleindell, but he signed his surname as Blundell. Richard Blundell….. very similar to Ric Blum. Also blundell means fair or blonde. Wasn’t Ric trying to get his victims to go blonde? This was the wedding to Jeanne Lucile Alice Gazel.

So that has opened up yet another rabbit hole, as if this story needs any more of those!

Oh and the Sulzbergers are The Ochs-Sulzbergers, owners of the NY Times.

Sorry this is going to be a long post, and Ive even condensed it down!

It is certainly an interesting story isn't it!

One that held some of us here, looking through his life for some time, and trying to work it all out.
The fact that he had the SAME Christian name and Surname of MC Husband, also made it interesting!


The story on DCOD life has been posted up many times over the years here and you have found them by the looks, although a few had been removed over the yrs.

Another sleuth KittensA, first found a writeup on DCOD yrs back and some of us did some background research on him.

At the time DCOD was found by KittensA, the case on RB as we know it today wasn't known to the public, but thanks to the inquest, the dates / years RB was going about his businesses, where he was in relation to his victims and some of the details on MC, AW and FD deaths, it puts a better timeline of his adventures.

His full name is Désiré Charles Octave Antoine David.

Some of us do believe that there may be :
1. a family connection to DCOD - this is possible, given MC husband DD has a long line of family connections, along with his own sister being a crook and swindling people.

2. RB used DCOD life as a blueprint for his own adventures, as there are many things that collide when you look at both stories. In fact DCOD sister looks exactly like DdeH.
~ FOR ME, this is the reason RB began his adventure of crime. I would NOT be surprised, if he kept a scrapbook of DCOD adventures and set about duplicating them because there is SO MUCH in the way of similarities to the DCOD case. And this is RB method, plagiarizing others before him.

DCOD isnt RB nor is he RB father. The dates do not align and I have documents to show some of DCOD life.

Personally I had, for a long time, held a belief that DCOD could have been MC husband AWouters as not much has been given on AW past and the only date we have to go on for an approx of his birth is the marriage notice to MC.
BUT TLV team have said AW, MC and FD all died within 12 mths of each other, around 1989 / 1992. So I am going with that.

DCOD isnt RB.

DCOD was born in 1895 in Isère ( the son of a teacher) - that would make him about 55 yrs old be the time RB was born in 1939 in Tournai

DCOD died in 1972 in Pyrenees-Atlantiques, France
I've mapped his whole family and have documents to show, including his death cert ( which is interesting also but for another day)



He definitely was a Lieutenant in WW1, and he WAS injured and discharged with a pension. He was a successful Officer and could have achieved great things, but when he was discharged he began his life of crime ( remind you of anyone? )

Over the years he was charged with breach of trust, theft, concealment, forgery and the use of forgery. He spent many yrs in and out of prison

Incidentally, both DCOD AND Tardieu, lived in an apartment in PASSY, in the 16th arrondissement, Paris.

Sorry this is going to be a long post, and Ive even condensed it down!

It is certainly an interesting story isn't it!

One that held some of us here, looking through his life for some time, and trying to work it all out.
The fact that he had the SAME Christian name and Surname of MC Husband, also made it interesting!


The story on DCOD life has been posted up many times over the years here and you have found them by the looks, although a few had been removed over the yrs.

Another sleuth KittensA, first found a writeup on DCOD yrs back and some of us did some background research on him.

At the time DCOD was found by KittensA, the case on RB as we know it today wasn't known to the public, but thanks to the inquest, the dates / years RB was going about his businesses, where he was in relation to his victims and some of the details on MC, AW and FD deaths, it puts a better timeline of his adventures.

His full name is Désiré Charles Octave Antoine David.

Some of us do believe that there may be :
1. a family connection to DCOD - this is possible, given MC husband DD has a long line of family connections, along with his own sister being a crook and swindling people.

2. RB used DCOD life as a blueprint for his own adventures, as there are many things that collide when you look at both stories. In fact DCOD sister looks exactly like DdeH.
~ FOR ME, this is the reason RB began his adventure of crime. I would NOT be surprised, if he kept a scrapbook of DCOD adventures and set about duplicating them because there is SO MUCH in the way of similarities to the DCOD case. And this is RB method, plagiarizing others before him.

DCOD isnt RB nor is he RB father. The dates do not align and I have documents to show some of DCOD life.

Personally I had, for a long time, held a belief that DCOD could have been MC husband AWouters as not much has been given on AW past and the only date we have to go on for an approx of his birth is the marriage notice to MC.
BUT TLV team have said AW, MC and FD all died within 12 mths of each other, around 1989 / 1992. So I am going with that.

DCOD isnt RB.

DCOD was born in 1895 in Isère ( the son of a teacher) - that would make him about 55 yrs old be the time RB was born in 1939 in Tournai

He definitely was a Lieutenant in WW1, and he WAS injured and discharged with a pension. He was a successful Officer and could have achieved great things, but when he was discharged he began his life of crime ( remind you of anyone? )

Over the years he was charged with breach of trust, theft, concealment, forgery and the use of forgery. He spent many yrs in and out of prison

Someone posted a gold coin here that was being sold in 2021 by one of Maria Coppenolle’s grandchildren. It would be very interesting to trace the actual history of the ownership of the coin, but in it’s ’official’ provenance it is said to have been curated at St Piat’s church in Tournay, while this might be true I wonder if the curator or church was ever robbed or swindled, I’ve searched high and low for info on this but haven’t found anything.

Mrs Sulzberger left us a bit of a clue in the press on something that was pinched from her hotel apartment, I’ll add the screenshot on here. I wonder if we could find a description of other items that she reported missing? And if Ric’s hero is 1895 DD then he may well be in possession of some of these items.

Also I don’t know if this is connected, but the timeline fits. I found this on retro news.fr, I tracked the boat, but it ran aground again in ‘61 and wasn’t recovered. I don’t know if this article is already known to the investigators, or if it is even the right WW.

RB sold that many coins that he stole or forged its hard to keep up with but if you are meaning the gold coin in relation to the Parish of Tournai that he stole, then he is talking about his grandfather, Marias father who died in 1949.

Was it ever confirmed/proven that AKA was in fact a Gendarme? NO actually that could have been one of his fantasies.

Can AKA sail or skipper a boat? He talked about getting some sort of boat to MC so maybe he can.

Yes, the references in his letter to MC

Previously it was found, by CarovB I think?, that he used some of his "flowery poetic" words in his letter, taken from the books:

"Venom House" by Arthur W. Upfield

"Rich Man Poor Man" by Irwin Shaw

"The Young Lions", Irwin Shaw

I know there is a news report in which Mathilde Tardieu asked the French police if she could keep one of 1895 Desirè’s love letters but they said no, I found it one night on retronews.fr but I’ve been through all my screenshots and I can’t find it and it is really bugging me now, but my point is I bet that Ric used the same style of writing in his love letters as 1895 Desirè.

With regards to the Sulzbergers and the thefts of their collections, could we find any more information about the missing objects maybe? If any of their objects have cropped up in auctions in recent years we might find Maria’s name or another deceased Coppenolle connected in the listed provenance?

Btw guys I checked out that child bust and it is obviously a fake, it sold for £140 something in 2022.

I think I’ll waste this evening looking for that Mathilde Tardieu news report . What is it about this saga that makes us get so deep into every scrap of info about this lot?

Speaking of Mrs Z victim, reminded me of the various Religious Movements and Cults that have been associated with this case.
Incredible really when you look at just how many people linked to this case, are involved with or have been involved with various Evangelist / Cult / Charismatic Movements.

Marion herself was connected to, through various peoples observations, to Scientology, United Church of God which was an offshoot of Wide World of God, Herman Far East Shining
So she obviously had some interest in the Evangelist side of Spiritual growth it seems.

The Scientology side of things has always interested me because of their connection to Hubbards Headquarters at St Hill Manor in Sussex, which is now the Scientology Museum and of course its connection to Tunbridge Wells.

Scientology began operations in Belgium in 1972, and had been through the courts for alleged fraud, tax evasion and forgery. Seems a perfect bolthole for a criminal.

Hubbard said, "THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM..., because the second you start telling anybody close to the truth, you start releasing him and he gets tougher and tougher to control." - Technique 88


Some of his victims were also involved with these various Religious Movements of Enlightenment.
Mrs Z and husband were another couple who possibly had a belief system similar, which I think was through the teachings of Mirra Alfassa.

I thought it strange at the time, he gave her that book by Alice Bailey, but not now. Now things are much clearer.

We know from previous posts and the work done by KiWi, Alice Bailey's teachings were connected to various Bali events run by astrologers and metaphysical teachers Alan Oken and Maggie Kerr, along with Komang Astawa, who joined some of their events. Maggie having a house in Bali and
of course being based on the Gold Coast, now calling herself Universal Maggie.

Previous posts remind us that an organisation based in Byron Bay, Universal Medicine also acknowledges the work of Alice Bailey.

Yeah that old info is so intriguing but sort of useless to the times surrounding and post his involvement with MB. It adds to his context but we will likely never actually have the truth confirmed.

While I agree to an extent, I think it’s possible that RB might have or have sold some of 1895 DD’s loot or property. It sure seems like RB was taught these scams. I think the lives mirroring is important, especially with The Orient Express being a sleeper train and also desire’s eldest child Jacqueline’s death at 14 and the alleged attempt on Evelyn. I do wonder if Jacqueline’s death is a reason why RB allegedly tampered with the champagne. We will likely never know, but it is an interesting train of thought to me.
