I've got my energy drink and smokes and I'm going to try my darnedest to stay up with the poor innocent people in that cafe.

Same here, probably end up a chain smoker after this.

As the terrorist is known to police I'm surprised we haven't heard or seen reports of police raids linked to this.

Police have said over and over today that they're not saying anything that might put the hostages at risk, including info about the guy.. I'd suppose that kind of thing, too.

It is late evening in Sydney now, and armed police have the Lindt cafe cordoned off and surrounded. This was the scene near the cafe a few moments ago.

Police are keeping the demands quiet, to help keep the hostages safe.

'Lone actor'

Posted at 11:52
No indications yet as to the hostage takers motives, but Anne Aly, head of the counter terrorism research programme at Australia's Curtin University, told the BBC's Outside Source programme he is likely to be working alone. "Certainly this appears to be the actions of a lone actor, perhaps not very well prepared, perhaps not very well planned, and the indications of the demands that he's making seem very odd for a hostage taking incident where you would expect materialistic or strategic demands to be made in connection with a particular group or cause."

Would the shop have inside cctv cameras that could be viewed from elsewhere?
I know some small business owners who can watch their factory remotely.

Families of those involved have gathered at Sir James Court.

OOh good question... I'd imagine that's the sort of thing cops'd keep real quiet... wonder if they have a view straight inside tho!

Look at where the hashtag #illridewithyou started ...

Australian radio stations took calls from Muslim listeners who said they were too scared to ride on public transport after the siege started in the Lindt cafe during the Monday morning rush hour.

"If you reg take the #373 bus b/w Coogee/MartinPl, wear religious attire, & don't feel safe alone: I'll ride with you. @ me for schedule," user 'Sir Tessa' tweeted. Moments later she tweeted "Maybe start a hashtag? What's in #illridewithyou?".

Thousands of people have now joined the spontaneous campaign, offering to meet Muslim people at their local stations and to ride with them on their journey.

But i am worried about the two other men seen with him prior to the siege commencing. Where are they and what's their go?

But do we know for sure if this alleged sighting was connected? Or even that it happened? There only seems to be the one witness.

Melissa Doyle from Channel7 has been on the street reporting and interviewing for many hours. She has a young family. Like Ray Hadley from 2GB today these true reporters are going above and beyond tonight.
