Australia orders all arrivals to self-isolate

Australia will impose 14-day self-isolation on international travellers arriving from midnight tonight and ban cruise ships from foreign ports for 30 days.

The moves mirror restrictions in nearby New Zealand, which are aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the new measures after a meeting with a newly formed national cabinet, dubbed the coronavirus 'war cabinet'.

Are people in countries other than Australia having actual physical fights over toilet paper? It’s disgusting.

This is why most of us who read through this thread since the Diamond Princess debacle are stocked. I have prepped for 3 weeks ..........I wanted to avoid the crowds and the nuts in the crowds.....

Woolworths has become the first supermarket giant to announce it will open early with a dedicated shopping hour for the elderly and disabled to stock up without being caught up in the panic-buying process.

Woolworths opens early for elderly and disabled people to shop during coronavirus frenzy | Daily Mail Online

This is great all supermarkets everywhere should be doing this. I am disabled I walk with crutches and my Dad walks with a walking stick. Going shopping has been a nightmare recently even though we have gone first thing in the morning.

Australians returning from overseas are told to self-isolate for 14 days - or face being fined up to $50,000 or jailed for a year

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has warned of the heavy financial penalty that awaits any person who arrives from overseas and does not self-isolate.

From midnight all people coming to Australia will have to self-isolate for 14 days, while cruise ships will be banned from arriving at Australian ports for an initial 30 days.

Ms Palaszczuk said on Sunday that laws were in place to deal with those who fail to follow a direction to self-isolate.

'In relation to legislation around that ... it's under our Public Health Emergency Act,' she said.

'That bill was passed in early February and there are penalties for not complying with the notification and that is around $13,000,' she said.
'We have random police checks to make sure people are compliant with that notice.'

Each state has varying punishments for breaches of public health orders.

In Western Australia, people who ignore a public health order could be hit with a $50,000 fine and spend up to 12 months behind bars.

Dire virus fear as death toll rises
A state of emergency has been declared in Victoria to deal with the spread of coronavirus and enforce the national 14-day isolation sanction for all travellers into Australia.

From midday on Monday, for at least four weeks, authorised officers can detain people, restrict movement and prevent entry to premises to protect the public.

“It is an offence under the public health and well being act to not comply with the orders that have been made,” Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters on Monday.

“Those orders in the first instance relate to that mandatory – not optional in any way – mandatory home quarantine or at a hotel if you are not a resident.”

Researchers want to trial drug ‘cure’ for coronavirus on patients

One of the two medications is a HIV drug, which has been superseded by “newer generation” HIV drugs, and the other is an anti-malaria drug called chloroquine which is rarely used and “kept on the shelf now” due to resistance to malaria.

TRAVEL BAN UPGRADED

The travel ban for every Australian is being upgraded to level four – do not travel – for the entire world.

"That is the first time that has ever happened in Australia's history," Mr Morrison said. "For those who are thinking of going overseas in the school holidays, don't. Don't go overseas. The biggest risk we have had and the biggest incidents of cases we have had has been from Australians returning from overseas, from many countries that you wouldn't have expected that to be a source."

BAN ON GATHERINGS OF 100

Indoor areas is 100, outdoor 500.

"That is effective now, as of today and those arrangements, in terms of the legal enforcement of those measures are being put in place by the States and Territories," Mr Morrison said.

The ban applies to all non-essential gatherings.

Further measures on indoor gatherings of fewer than 100 people are being worked on by the states and territories.
