28 NOV 2014 - 10:41 AM UPDATED YESTERDAY 2:54 PM

A woman accused of attempted murder following the discovery of a newborn boy in a drain in Sydney's west is likely to apply for bail next month.

The 30-year-old did not appear at a brief hearing at Penrith Local Court on Friday and her lawyer indicated she might apply for bail when the matter was next heard on December 12.

The boy was originally estimated to be two to three days old when found last Sunday, but court has heard that he was born in the early hours of November 18 before being placed into the drain.

If the allegation is true, it means he survived in the Quakers Hill drain for up to five days before being found by a passing cyclist.

Police suspect the baby was squeezed through the drain's narrow opening and dropped about 2.4 metres. Several people worked together to lift the heavy slab covering the drain to get him out.

The woman has admitted to putting the infant down the drain, knowing it may kill him, police say.

The baby is in the care of NSW Family and Community Services.

It will be up to the state agency to assess what happens to him.

The baby was taken to Westmead Children's Hospital in a serious condition after being rescued, but was discharged on Friday, a spokeswoman confirmed.

The baby must be doing fairly well if he was discharged...:)

I hope they give this precious baby a whole new start with an entirely different family. I don't believe his birth mother is in any shape to raise him. If she had dropped him in a SAFE place, and then changed her mind, then I would want her to be given a second chance with him. But dropping him down an 8 foot sewer pipe--NO.

Agreed...I wouldn't think any judge/jury/court would return this child to this mother, ppd or not...

(She left that baby to die a slow, awful death...can't fathom...she must have lost her mind...whatever the case, I too hope the baby has a safe, loving home from now on, and does not have any long term damage!)

oh no children found a baby's body!!
My heart goes out for these children. :(

THE body of a baby has been found on a beach at Maroubra this morning by children playing in the sand.

A crime scene has been established following the gruesome discovery.

About 10:05am, Sunday 30 November 2014, a number of children were playing at the southern end of South Beach when they located the body of a baby in the sand.

Any updates for this baby boy?

What on earth is happening in our country?

In a horrible coincidence, one of the slaughtered children in Cairns is named Azariah - which is the name I speculated the mother have to this baby boy.

Fruity, I just now posted up the names of the murdered kids, saw "Azariah" and thought of your post.

Dunno what's going on in Aus this year, past couple years, really. It's like we've hit a huge slippery slope of a sudden with truly heinous crimes. Bad week, this week. Love to everyone.

No updates I can find as how he's doing, where he ended up, etc.. But here's some reports that are a bit nice, restoring faith in humanity, etc:

Northern Beaches Facebook mums rally to help baby found in drain

WHEN Sophie Graham asked people on the Northern Beaches Mums’ Facebook page to help the baby found in a drain in western Sydney, she was inundated.

Manly restaurant DeVita Tastes of Napoli is also holding fundraiser for the baby.

-- And from Woman's Day:

The humble rescuers of the newborn baby found at the bottom of a Sydney stormwater drain have vowed to do all they can for their little miracle mate.

The pair have since dropped a care package to the hospital containing three sets of clothes, a towel set, a blanket and a washer.

“Every time I’m alone, I think about it,” says Hayley. “A picture of when they first opened the drain pops straight into my brain … that sound of the baby crying, it’s just imprinted in my mind.”

“I really want to be able to see this kid as he gets older, even if it’s just once a year,” says a smitten Hayley.

“I want him to feel love”.

Sorry if it's already been linked, but this article gives some insight into the mother's life:

According to police, the woman had been living with her aunt and uncle in Quakers Hill in Sydney's west when she became pregnant and kept her condition secret for nine months.

...the reason she hid the pregnancy was less about the church and for 'cultural reasons' to do with the traditional Samoan community, but he believed the father of the child was Samoan and had 'perhaps moved away'.

Last update I can find said she did not apply for bail, and bail was refused.
