Surry Hills: Two elderly men found dead in Cleveland Street home, police launch investigation

Police have launched an investigation after the bodies of two men were found in a house in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Surry Hills.
Emergency services were called to a property on Cleveland Street around 2pm on Thursday, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Police believe the men died at different times within the past month. Neither has been formally identified, but both are believed to be aged in their 70s or 80s.

A 63-year-old woman who resides at the property has been spoken to by detectives.

Would think that the smell would have been bad - for thr 63 year old woman that lived there.

Definitely you'd think that would be a concern straight away

I was just wondering if maybe the woman didn't realise they were dead or that she hadn't seen them for awhile.

If living in the same house - it would be noticeable within 7 days - as the dead bodies would bloat and leak. Maybe 10 days in winter. Perhaps she has learning difficulties. But 2 deaths seems odd.

Police say a woman was living with the bodies of two men for almost a month after their deaths in the inner Sydney suburb of Surry Hills.

Behind the door of the decrepit two-storey home on Cleveland Street, authorities made the chilling discovery of the two elderly men's decomposing bodies.

Eleanor Barker had been living with them, police say even after the men's deaths, which they believe were almost a month ago.

A friend of Barker's contacted police yesterday after speaking to the 63-year-old, prompting a welfare check.

Detectives are speaking with the 63-year-old as they try to figure out how the men died and why their deaths were not reported.

Police have made no arrests as they await autopsies to confirm the causes of death.

I wonder if their Centrelink payments were still being claimed.
Great question and sure we will find out opens up a huge amount of possibilities and whether or not Eleanor was a carer/wife/family member of the men.

Woman lived with decomposing bodies for weeks, police say

Jul 05, 2025, updated Jul 05, 2025

No arrests have been made and police reportedly do not suspect the housemate of involvement in the deaths.

Detectives said they had spoken to the 63-year-old woman, who was also the landlord.

The Guardian reports she has owned and lived at property since the 1980s, and rented it out to the two men for at least a decade.

This is a bit different

On Thursday afternoon, Eleanor Barker, 63, made a welfare concern call to police about one of her tenants. She has owned and lived at the Cleveland Street property in Surry Hills since the 1980s, and rented it out to the two men for at least a decade.

Officers arrived at the property at about 2pm on Thursday and located the body of a man inside the house, police said. A crime scene was established, and a short time later, a second body was found in a separate room.

So which is it, an unnamed friend made the welfare call or she made the call.

So she was both the landlord as well as lived in the same house with them. Maybe she still charged them rent!

In the meantime all can do is wait.

It does sound like she rented out rooms.
It's like the old taking in a boarder and yes they would have paid to live there.
