Australia Australia - Suzanne Armstrong, 28, Susan Bartlett, 27, Collingwood, Vic, 10 Jan 1977

Started thread for Julie in light of new article..

''Following the arrest last month of a man over the 1977 murders of Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett in their home in Easey Street, Collingwood, Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Combridge, of the Missing Persons Squad, said those with knowledge of what happened to Julie had lived with the secret for almost five decades and “now is the time to do the right thing and come forward”.

I just started reading Murder on Easey Street by Helen Thomas ... only just starting Chapter 5 at the moment.

Already, in Chapter 3, Julie Ann Garciacelay has been spoken of. The crime reporter named John Grant was initially a POI in Julie's investigation because he was among the last known people to see her alive.
John Grant also knew the next door neighbour of Susan and Suzanne - Ilona - and had stayed on the couch at Ilona's place on the (Monday) night that the murders happened.
He and Ilona had been out for the night, and had gone to sleep at around 2am (Tuesday morning).

Ilona is the person who found the girl's dead bodies, and a very weak, whimpering, dehydrated little Gregory still in his cot, on the Thursday.

Still working my way through Easey Street. Very impressed with the way Ron Iddles ran Unsolved Homicides. He went to the US for cold case training, came back and went through all of Vic's cold case files. He marked them all. Some red as "unsolvable", some yellow as "need a complete overhaul" and some green as "solvable".

Suzanne and Sue's file was marked green. Because they had the killer's DNA.

He resolved to work on 25 cold cases each year.

(It impresses me so much because of the NSW Unsolved Homicides debacle.)

imo

I'm also impressed by the way Helen Thomas goes about her work. If she was a footballer she'd be considered a straight-ahead player. She doesn't take a sidestep. Very focused. Doesn't suffer fools.

In the light of perhaps a Mr. Big op being used , ( because VICPOL got him out of Athens somehow ) this article by the ABC may be of interest...

Have been listening to that podcast you suggested and the Mr Big sting they pulled on Glenn Weaven is so similar to the one the police pulled in the Daniel Morcombe case I was starting to think I had heard the Weaven story before.

The Greek Herald

Australian homicide squad detectives are on standby to travel to Rome, as a comprehensive brief of evidence on the 1977 Easey Street murders has been sent to Italian authorities.

According to the Herald Sun a decision on whether suspect Perry Kouroumblis will be extradited for the murders of Suzanne Armstrong, 27, and Susan Bartlett, 28, may be reached as early as next week.

After nearly five decades, Victoria Police are closer than ever to solving Melbourne's infamous Easey Street murder case. Final steps are being taken to extradite the long-time suspect, giving the victims' families renewed hope for closure after years of delays.

The other case?

Haven't had a chance to sift through all of today's news yet or even watch the two clips above but thought I heard the other case being connected with Perry Kouroumblis was a North Melbourne killing. The only unsolved North Melbourne killing I could readily think of from back in those days was Julie Garciacelay.

Thing is, Kouroumblis was born in 1959, making him only 18 when the Easey Street murders occurred in January 1977. The Garciacelay murder happened in July 1975. Kouroumblis would have only been 16 at the time and living in Collingwood. So he just doesn't seem to be a good fit for that one.

Mary Ann Fagan, in Armadale.. a tram ride away... 2 trams the 96 in, and the East Malvern 5 out,, but that's nothing, in Melbourne.. that was in1978. a woman alone, with kids, in her home....

North Melbourne would be no effort by tram, either...

According to Channel 7, the other murder referred to is that of Julie Garciacelay

Eurydice Dixon's murderer stalked and followed her for 5 klms, on foot , thru the city from Flinders St station, all the way up to Princes Park, just before Brunswick... not too tired to murder her then... Collingwood to North Melbourne is do-able...

If it was Kouroumblis, it was an opportunistic murder because Julie Garciacelay travelled home from work that day with 3 men and was at her home in North Melbourne until she went out, alone, to make a phone call from a public phone box.

It doesn't give the 16 year old, living in Collingwood at the time, a very big window of time to have coincidentally seen Garciacelay.
