Theo could have fallen asleep round 2am and could have woken up round 6am . Where? Unknown.
Or something happened around 2am (separated from phone by gang, or doofers, or Theo was asleep but got mugged by homeless campers etc), and the 6am ping could be a local or perhaps homeless camper finding the phone and turning it on, but battery was flat so it didn’t start up. They may have then just left it there and then it’s found again at 1.42pm and switched on again by another beach goer, or homeless camper has taken it up into bushland.

They could have split once they got to a certain point (the beach) or some point earlier. Someone who knows Tallows and was being chased, should know to head south toward Suffolk Park houses. CC is a dead end and the wrong direction to head once reaching the beach if being chased.
Yeah that’s very true. And if they weren’t being chased then why run that way?

was there a time stamp on this picture by chance? Or is it just after sunset?

When I was at CC at the end of July it got dark pretty early, by 6:30pm you wouldn’t be able to see anything down there. He disappeared on the eve of winter, I’m thinking 8pm that night on that beach would seem like midnight.

It could have been at midnight, however if only going by the darkness then it could have been from anytime an hour after sunset IMO

Hey T,

You cant get a timestamp from a photo on Insta however you can get the time and date the photo was posted to Instagram by Unix ISO code.

You can see the first paragraph, it then goes on to say ....

"Visitors to Byron also frequently go to Tallow Beach on Friday and Saturday nights for camp fires, raising the prospect there are witnesses who saw the 18-year-old when he went there about midnight on Friday, May 31.

A new episode of The Australian’s investigative podcast, The Lighthouse, to be released today, also reveals that after getting to an area at Tallow Beach known as Cosy Corner, Theo went up a densely vegetated hill.

He stopped amid a tangle of vines, in a completely private area above the beach, for 5½ minutes."

And now (in my own words so I don't breach the 10% copyright rule) ......

Byron local Sheri D’Rosario said that she thinks Theo was hiding because where he stopped is horizontal branches and vines with sharp prickles.
She said it is really dark there and would be pitch black at night. Nobody would have been able to see Theo or know he was there.
Though there is another theory that Theo went there with someone else.
The podcast has revealed that Theo walked to the sports field at the end of Tennyson.
He stopped there for 7 mins, and there are a 'series' of homeless camps close by.
Local youths go there on weekends and drink around small fires.
Byron Bay resident Nicoletta Revis also retraced Theo's steps. She said that a person can barely walk into the private area at Tallow Beach where Theo had gone.
She said nobody would go there at night.
Theo's family have traced all of his movement that night - through Theo's Google account and his phone.
Google's location tracking stops at 12:05am when he was at Cosy Corner.
He continued to use his phone to send messages and watch the YouTube vid.
One of the biggest questions is why Theo went to Tallow Beach as he had been using maps to look up his way to the hostel along Belongil Beach - and Tallow Beach is in the other direction.
Brazilian backpackers said in the podcast they often go to Tallow Beach on weekends for a bush party, but one of them said they didn't remember if there was a party that night.
People hear about the parties from friends, and everyone cleans the place up after the parties.
Or if you have a girlfriend you might go to Tallow Beach.
Lisa Hayez said Theo didn't do drugs, but she wonders if someone had drugged Theo.

Oh vow, thanks SouthAussie. Going into the prickly area for 5 and half minutes. This can't be good. I am a bit confused as if his phone mapping was off at 12.05 does this mean he went to this prickly spot before he sent his texts, watched you-tube? Perhaps he or if he was with someone else thought they were being followed? Stayed there until he/they believed they were safe? This kind of fits in with my theory that he went there with a girl who may have been in trouble, and an angry BF possibly followed. Why was he hiding there? He must have felt unsafe at that point. Perhaps he did not feel safe with whoever he went there with if he did go looking for a doof party with someone. Looking forward to tomorrow's podcast. All these clues are now coming out.

I wonder when Theo put Belongil Beach into maps. It looks to me that, as someone said earlier, Theo was initally planning to walk back to the hostel along the beach.

If I put Belongil Beach in from Cheeky Monkey's, I get this.

If I put it in from Tennyson Street, I get this.

I would think that Theo stood in the prickly spot up a 'densely vegetated hill' before he went on to Cosy Corner and sent the texts and watched a bit of the video, while the location tracking was still on? Otherwise, I don't see how they would know that he stood at the prickly spot for 5½ mins.

In which case he/they were more likely trying to get away from someone, given the strange route they took off Milne track then through the bush, then bush again at end of Cosy. He/they (IMO) waited for 5 and a half minutes to see if coast was clear then relaxed believing he/they were alone.

I’m thinking the prickly spot is after CC. Remember early on a map of his route was released and at CC it looked like he veered left and right (the route resembled a Y shape)? It appeared like someone trying to find paths up over the cliff but not getting far. Anyway that just came to mind when I read this on The Australian site.

It’s very sort of dark in here. At night it would be absolutely pitch black and it’s hidden from the beach, so nobody around will be able to see in and even know that we were here.” Another theory is that Theo was with someone when he went into this private area.

This is the original map showing the paths to the left and right at CC.

Hunt for missing backpacker called off

I wonder how precise those dots are? Is it possible that Theo was walking the Cosy Corner Trail from the car park? To be more hidden from view.
The trail runs parallel to the dotted lines, and may provide quicker access to this 'prickly spot'.

I have read not-good-things about that carpark. Cruisers parking there to watch the 'handsome young lads' surfing.

I do remember that map, which lead me to the theory Theo was looking at a way back to WU...

Still strikes me as odd; if running from someone, why not go to a house if he/they felt in danger....or run toward town? Even if they did go the track to Tallows, then why not head toward a campfire on the beach, if there was one?

And no messages sent after the "prickly area" indicated Theo was in danger....i'm more confused really.

The article says he went to the vines after he had reached CC:

But yes, it must have been before GPS turned off.
Maybe a silly question: could he have had to go to the bathroom? Or perhaps be somewhere private with a girl? Or are those vines too prickly?

RSBM

But if the prickly spot was after Cosy Corner, how would they know that Theo stopped there for 5½ mins?

Google’s detailed location tracking of Theo stops at 12.05am on Saturday, June 1, when he was at Cosy Corner. However, he continued using his phone to send messages and to watch a YouTube video of a French TV show called Burger Quiz.

Oh - on 2nd thoughts - I guess the prickly spot could be considered to be at Cosy Corner. Just up a densely vegetated hill there.
