Theo is described as responsible, cautious, not a fighter in the podcasts. One description caught my attention which may be a clue. Theo was strongly against injustice. So let's think outside the box again, and look at another possibility going by his character description. Two days before Theo went missing screaming was heard from the Tennyson squatters camp area according to a local living in the area. Perhaps this happens there often. Being a Friday night and people more likely to be drinking and affected, possibly fighting, the chances are high of fights going on. Maybe Theo heard someone in distress while taking a quieter back street to find his way home away from drunks etc on main street. Maybe there was screaming coming from this area again. So he walks to this area and finds someone vulnerable under attack, perhaps a bad or violent domestic, he stays in the area for 7 minutes hoping to put a stop to it. Tries to negotiate or settle the situation. While attacker is distracted the girl or person sees their chance to get away and takes off in a hurry away from the camp, the fight is stopped and Theo follows to make sure they are ok. This could be a valid reason for him to walk the route he did. A girl or someone in distress, upset, he is not sure if they are hurt or at risk of harm in their state and he wants to make sure they are ok. This would explain the faster pace. A person wanting to get away fast from a bad situation, so Theo walks fast too with them. The person in distress knows the area if they come from the camp would very likely would know other camping spots at Tallow, and along with that the bush, or maybe in their state simply did not care, possibly drunk, distressed, scared and just wanting to get away not caring about tracks. So Theo goes after the person, forgets about going home for now. Walks with this person to try settle them, make sure he/she is ok. Meanwhile behind them whoever was fighting with this person follows at a distance or sees the way they head and guesses. He follows them still angry from the fight and at the interference. Theo and whoever he is with do not know they are being followed. Before 1 am everything seems fine as Theo is not aware of any danger. Sometime after 1.00 am it all goes bad when whoever followed shows up. The girl/ person or whoever Theo went with unable to help, she/he have to return back with the attacker and have to keep their mouth shut, terrified and burdened with knowledge no one else can possibly reveal and in fear of their own life. Perhaps Theo tried to help someone, prevent an injustice which veered him completely from his plans, which seemed to be returning back to Wake Up by his mapping. I think it is clear he had no intentions of going where he ended up, if he was going to go there he would have planned and looked at the maps, like he did for Wake Up. Something very random and fast changed his plans, it is not in his character not to plan, take risks of walking through scrub at midnight, perhaps it was because of an injustice he witnessed, tried to fix or help someone, something he is said to feel strongly about and could not simply walk past or ignore. And someone in distress could very well take the strange route they have taken in the middle of the night as they would not be thinking clear and Theo followed, hoping to settle her/him. This possibility is there among many and may explain the strange route, change of pace, because he followed someone who was not thinking clear who he was hoping to help. There has to be a reason why this route was taken and to this unlikely destination. It is not normal to go there so something not normal very likely led to there. Theo was at a barb q earlier in day, then Cheeky's, was not a hard drinker so cannot see him seeking out beach parties in middle of the night with random strangers while he is googling the map to go home. He was mapping home, not other places. Something random happened which he was unable to ignore and this part of his character, feeling strong against injustice would fit a theory like this one. We can almost guess surely he was with someone, he did not know many people, was not likely to walk off in the bush with random strangers, did have going home on his mind as was mapping Wake Up yet ended up totally elsewhere and showed not one sign of planning on it. Him taking Kingsley way may well have been to avoid trouble, knowing main street would have drunks etc. Or hoping for a ride from someone camped there. Something changed everything when he got to Tennyson

@feralflower : I don't quite get how Théo could have heard/seen a fight, screams from Tennyson when leaving CM's ?
Is it so close ?

I have a possible explanation for why Théo took Tennyson. When he exists CM’s he is already walking at a steady pace before looking at his phone. By the time he enters the search terms for Wake Up into GM, he is already out of our view and approaching Closer to Kingsley St than to CM. Therefore GM will not likely be calculating route from CM, but rather from closer to where he is naturally heading which looks like Kingsley. At night GM won’t direct you to walk down Middleton - it isn’t green lit. Only gives Jonson and Tennyson as options. From Tennyson it leads you as far as Marvel St, just past the YAC then around Lawson to Shirley Streets.

Agree something took place in those 7 mins which hold vital clues.

Not close enough to hear from CM especially with the background noise of the streets and club. TBH from what we know of Theo so far, he doesn't seem like the type who would go check out screams or sounds of fighting on his own in a dark street in an area he is not familiar with, I would be hi tailing it out the other direction if it was me. Even if he approached the end of Tennyson and heard fighting I still feel IMO he would have turned and walked away. I am only going on his family and that they have said that he was sensible etc

However if you’re on Kingsley and want to go to WU, it directs you back down Kingsley to Jonson. If you’re on Tennyson, it directs you to go left at Marvel and walk down to Jonson. He didn’t go left at Marvel, but continued down Tennyson to the end.

He might have been embarrassed or pissed off at leaving CMs so abruptly by being kicked out, and headed off for a walk to let off a little steam and energy. He’s gone from having a great time straight to being put outside alone. No real segue and maybe thought it was unfair/unjust.

That’s true if you search by walk more. But he might’ve had it on drive mode from previous trips in and out of town in bus and Uber.

It’s only a further 1 minute by foot from the corner of Marvel and the Rec fields on Tennyson. Perhaps he saw something? Or like others have said, was meeting someone there.

Much of a muchness. I still got return down Kingsley to Jonson as the predominant route in drive mode. Doubt the mode is a focus IMO.

Agree it’s not a focus but if maps can take me that way then it’s a likelihood it suggested this direction to Théo. IMO he didn’t have any plans after being kicked out and was trying to get home. And if he runs into ppl at the Rec Fields then it’s highly unlikely they are ppl he knows in which case I can’t get him following them (running mind you) through the Milne track past the Tallows car park beach exit and into thick scrub with some local he just met. If I could rule out maps taking him down Tennyson then I’d be more likely to assume he had plans to meet someone and he knew where he was going.

You can configure the routes in GMs until the cows come home, and the bottom line will always be that it wasn’t a simple part of the journey to be at the oval.

From all known accounts he put in WU at every chance. Not Main beach, not Tennyson, not Milne, not Middleton. If Middleton was chosen, well ok, as that’s within the block and has logic.

Tennyson is an intentional deviation. The only way it can make sense given what we know, is that his intention was to walk to Main beach and he could see a direct path to Main beach on his CMs to WU map.

The direction GM sent Théo in will already have been visible to family and those making the podcast. I would need to know whether Théo followed the direction of GM or not.

He would have heard possibly once he was walking the road Tennyson looking for a quieter street to take him home, via beach route. He could have cut through there if he kept going straight to get to the beach. Someone mentioned Middleton, the closer st looked dark so he may have avoided it, Tennyson St looked more lit up at the beginning. Yes Theo deviated from the most obvious route home via Johnson St but may have done so to avoid the night life, being on his own and in a strange place thought might be safer taking the back streets. He would not have heard anything when leaving CM's, it would be too far away then but maybe saw or heard something when he got closer to the end of Tennyson, where something made him stop. The red line I drew if he kept walking straight would have taken him to the beach and would actually be a shorter route to get to the beach than taking Johnson St, if he planned to use the beach to walk home. A small detour to avoid main town maybe. Not sure why he turned down Kingsley can only guess.

“On this journey Theo repeatedly uses Google Maps, each time searching for how to get back to his hostel. But the Google Timeline shows he was going the opposite way to the hostel.”

Being sensible does not preclude helping someone who is being victimised. imo

There was just debate about this on another thread. Many have and would help a person who is being victimised - either by stepping in, or by calling the police. Some wouldn't assist due to their own anxieties or fears.

I realise that you are a new poster, but that is not how it works on WS.
Everyone is more than entitled to express their opinion, but if things are stated as fact we must have acceptable links to back it up.

Not a problem if it is expressed as an opinion.
OK thanks

I agree Theo does not seem like the kind to invite trouble but what if for instance he saw a girl being beat up would he be able to simply walk past if someone was seriously being harmed? Sometimes people are put in situations where there is not much choice and walking away not an option. He could have got caught up trying to help. Yes he was sensible but he was also strong against injustice. Would he walk past if he saw someone being hurt or would he try help? It would be hard to walk past if one seen another person being seriously hurt.
