Rick Thorburn kept foster care licence

Queensland child safety officials waited almost six months to suspend the foster care and family daycare approvals of accused killer Rick Thorburn — despite Tiahleigh Palmer allegedly being murdered under his watch.

Mr Thorburn, 56, and wife Julene — who was charged with perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice — were *approved as foster carers in August 2014.

Shortly after, Tiahleigh came under their care. She went missing on October 30 last year. The 12-year-old’s body was found six days later beside the Pimpama River, south of the Gold Coast.

Following Mr Thorburn’s *arrest on Tuesday, and him being charged with murder and interfering with a corpse, Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman yesterday announced a fresh review into the approval process of blue cards, which allow Queenslanders to work with children.

Yesterday on one of the fighters against child abuse pages someone said they barricaded themselves in the house when the police turned up and he took them then.

This is what makes the sifting of information hard. There is a lot that gets posted that is true because local people talk.

Then there is a heap of bull. Even the early reports by friends that she spoke to them that morning. He was always the last person to have seen her but there was all this bull floating around early on.

It's almost like WT with the media again. Fact vs media ******** vs police tactics/legals

Very possible and even something as benign as paracetamol can cause massive liver failure after about 24hrs, if an OD is taken.

I was thinking about that last night. It doesn't seem to be a property related to the Thorburns - here's the article to refresh my memory! Also on this link, at the bottom, is a timeline of the Tia case.

EDIT: Now I'm not sure if this is what you were referring to; I'm not sure about an African family, this says it was vacant. I'm a bit confused as to which property this is now...

Yes thats the house. The family gave interviews denying they had ever seen Tia. They had only just moved out. The poor family copped a bit of flack as you can imagine


So this happened before the charges.

They did a very thorough forensic investigation that would have cost them a pretty sum.

They could be the landlords of the property. I don't know how easy it is for you guys to suss that one out

The house is more low income suburbia close to the school. I can't see the mad mum putting up with such a place. Boys went to hills remember. Not cheap for South Brisbane. No where for horses either. If it is only a 3bdr then they wouldn't have ever been allowed to live there with Tiah.

Also family day care approval would be property based so theres something to look into.

It appears to me that in her Post #654, she simply was referring to the statement in the Daily Mail story about Tialeigh's biological mum was hoping to regain custody of her (after spending years in and out of prison). That was the way I interpreted it, anyway.

Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls said the case showed the need for an investigation into the state's foster care system.

"It should be investigated by the child and family services commission," he said.

But Foster Care Queensland executive director Bryan Smith said that appeared to be a "knee-jerk reaction".

"We have one of the most in-depth and stringent arrangements around the approval of foster carers in Australia," Mr Smith told AAP.

There are more than 8000 children in out-of home care in Queensland with over 5000 carers.

In the last year, 30 carers were cancelled - 18 as a result of a notification from the blue card system and 12 from internal government investigation.
