The article states that she owned the car and it was given to neighbours - if she didn't give it to them then they have stolen it.

Just saying it's a logical assumption but not stated that she gave it to them. I think purposely not stated that she gave it to them to distance her in any way from looking like an accessory. How long after WT went missing did she decide to give the car away? MOO

So police questioned AJ in April of 2015 and he can remember exactly where he was and what he was doing on 12 September 2014! He obviously has a really good memory, considering he arrived home drunk on the afternoon of 12 September.
Detectives interviewed Jones while he was in custody in April and questioned him about any involvement in William's disappearance.
It is understood Jones told police and family he was "out bush" collecting scrap metal on the day William went missing from Kendall.

Seriously, who just gives someone a car? I'm leaning more to the car being 'out of sight, out of mind' at the neighbour's place. My hinky meter is buzzing right now.

Would there be a recorded transaction of any scrap metal sales? Or is it more under the table? I know it can attract sketchy types who destroy houses for the copper etc. Wonder what AJ said he found that day and what he did with it.

Right? Unless the neighbors were going through a tough time and this was a charitable act.. but if someone OFFERED me a car, unsolicited and for free I would probably call the police right then and there!

The ex-wife said she kicked AJ out in September last year.So what car was he driving when he left of did he leave on foot? In a taxi perhaps? So the white station wagon belonged to the ex-wife, she's kicked AJ out and gave her own car away. It doesn't make sense. If the car belonged to AJ and she gave it away, I could half understand but if it did belong to him, why didn't he take it. It's a station wagon. Lots of room to pack all your stuff in when you've been kicked out.

I agree Makara, it's lucky it wasn't in parts, crushed or burned out.

I think he left in the back of a Police Car :)

My hubby & i gave a good cheaper car we had bought while in Aus. to our neighbours a few years ago when we moved from Australia back to the States. If it is going to be driven and not used for spare parts you have to give registration details to the new owner and sign it over to them as we did, because it was going to be driven by them.
I don't know what the circumstances were in this case though?

It would more than likely be cash in hand for scrap metal sales.

BBM: He probably doesn't remember that bit!

But if someone asked if you would store their car on your property for a while, would you?
