And why do they think a car part may have fallen off, if they're looking for the part? Is it a question of the identity of two vehicles perhaps captured on CCTV . . . and a POI admits to one being his, and denies the other, because he wasn't there and look, that's not the same car, it's missing a ---. Or it has a different number plate maybe.
That car part has always been a mystery. It sure as heck isn't on the off-chance that they are/were looking for a car part. Someone's vehicle was missing a car part, or had a car part replaced recently (at the time) because they had lost the part.
Yes, it could have been a before/after thing. CCTV showing a vehicle with a car part, CCTV later on showing the vehicle without the car part.
Or it could have been a noisy muffler heard in the forest. And someone had been into a garage and had their muffler/tailpipe/whatever fixed.
