The recommendation to the Commissioner of Police states that when a risk assessment identifies that there is a high, or very high risk that the missing person is the victim of a homicide or suspicious death, the Homicide Squad is to be immediately advised.

It is already police policy that during the first 72 hours of an investigation into a homicide or suspicious death, the Homicide Squad is the leading investigator.

I wonder if these recommendations from last year have been put into place already.

In regards to the 72 hours - it seems they were still treating him as a missing person, not a homicide, so I would assume the Homicide Squad was not the leading investigator at that time, but that they were still involved.

It's hard to know whether there has been a development, or whether this is just a normal step in the procedure after a certain amount of time. The police indicate the latter, but what was the point of them announcing it to the media?

yes. its puzzling, wondering whats changed to make it a homicide investigation now, people can be regarded as missing for years without assuming they have been murdered, why do they now suspect this and that hes not just being hidden away somewhere.
could the media release be strategic to either lull or scare the perp?
i really hope this beautiful little boy is found alive

Yeah, it is weird. Everything was hush-hush and vague for so long... now out of nowhere it's announced as a homicide investigation. It has been silent for weeks, now this. I don't know a lot about how the police work but it looks like a "scare" to me. Maybe they are watching for irrational or panicked behaviour. I dunno.

Oops, I now see that was what Burtrito meant by his post about surveillance. Welcome!

As there has been no police update to confirm this is no longer a missing persons case, I wonder if the media have misreported this 'development'.

 • #249
Hmm .. I think that they have probably reported this new development correctly. It seems that the other specialist squads are still involved too, but with Homicide joining the team. Which is very sad, as it could mean that they suspect that some creepy, opportunistic perv got hold of William imo.

Some articles say that Homicide have taken over, some say that they have joined the investigation. I don't actually remember them being part of it before - though I do remember the sex crimes squad and 'other' specialists being involved from the get-go.

Homicide detectives have joined the search for William Tyrell .... Sex crimes squad officers and other specialist police are also involved in the investigation.

BBM:
.... it has previously been reported that police checked in with all registered sex offenders living in the area, but no trace of William has yet been found.

"Superintendent Paul Fehon is careful with the language he uses, mindful to not cause more distress to William’s family. Detectives with the homicide squad and the child sex abuse squad have both been helping with the inquiry and cadaver dogs have combed the area for kilometres around the peaceful village of Kendall."

This article was published on NOV 1st.

Thanks Burtrito .. I must have missed that. So they have definitely been involved from a couple of months into the investigation, at the very least.

I'm getting an uneasy feeling about this disappearance. I said to someone yesterday, you never know what creepy, slimy pervs get up to. They are consummate liars, and if no-one actually saw anyone creeping around this beautiful little boy, or watching him from a short distance ..... :(

ETA: The say they have no solid leads, but that doesn't mean that they do not have some known indicators. I would think that they have had a profiler look at this case.

I wish, for once, we could get a straight answer. Or at least the media could report straight facts without mishearing things or putting their own spin on it. Always so much confusion surrounding this case

just wondering, does anybody know if the people in kendall have been issued a warning from police to be careful as there may be a child abductor etc in their midst?
i read the people in the township are feeling the sadness and mystery of the situation and thats understandable, but are they worried their children may be at risk?

I have read a few articles where the townspeople have said that they are worried for their children. Here is one of them.

Business owner and mum-of-three Holly, who did not want her surname used, said she began locking her doors for the first time the day that William went missing.

“I’ve never locked them *before, but I started two weeks ago,” she said. “I definitely don’t feel as safe leaving the kids alone anymore. It’s school holidays and normally there would be kids everywhere, but it’s pretty deserted.”

The owner of Miss Nelly’s Cafe, Jenelle Nosworthy, said many people no longer felt safe letting their children outside alone.

“They’re thinking twice about it now, which is sad *because this is the sort of place where normally kids are playing outside on the street,” Ms Nosworthy said.

Kendall Community Centre volunteer Naomi, who also did not want her last name used, said the streets were much quieter since William had gone missing. She said: “Kids are normally just running around, toddling up the road to the neighbour’s house, but you don’t see many kids wandering around anymore.”

thanks southaussie, so from that i guess police have left it open for locals to be afraid, because surely the media would have picked up if there was a police statement warning of a predator?
unless its part of their strategy if they have an idea what happened to william?

 • #258
I guess it is possible that they have a very good idea (now .. and maybe since earlyish in the piece) of what has happened to William. I keep thinking of the big covert sting operation where they followed Daniel Morcombe’s abductor all the way to Perth and befriended him to get enough info to charge him and get him to somewhat cooperate. We didn’t get any whiff of that until it was all over … years later.

Splashing around the ‘new’ info that Homicide is leading the case could also be a move to spook an unofficial suspect(s).

I don’t believe that police release any information without their own personal good reasons ......

And it only happened after his parents pushed for an inquest into the case. The case had dragged on for years.
