I wonder why William’s BP weren’t legally represented at the Directions Hearing and/or haven’t applied to be granted leave to appear at the inquest under s.57?

(btw this is not a criticism of either Karlie or Brendan—I’m simply curious.)

Possibly because bio parents had been cleared of involvement from the very beginning. The inquest is not inquiring into why William was in foster care.

Puzzling, for sure. Especially with the inclusion of Mr Savage. Was he the last person other than William’s FP to see him? Was he the first witness to William’s FM panicking when she couldn’t find him? If so, why haven’t other witnesses been mentioned as granted leave to appear and left scrabbling to engage legal representation at short notice? The mention of Mr Savage being granted leave came as a real shock to me, I can tell you.

The granting of leave to appear means he applied to appear. He more than likely became prominent yesterday due to participating via video link and still to obtain a legal rep and advising the coroner where he is at in the process.

You wouldn't be granted leave if appearing via involuntary ie compulsary summons. You would be simply be summonsed to appear.

Wonder what the physical artefacts are..

"A massive brief of evidence will need to be compiled from physical artefacts, thousands of tip-offs and a "persons of interest" list hundreds of names long."
Coroner to look into William Tyrrell case

Weren't police looking very early on for some things which may have fallen from a car?
"Teams of officers in cars and on foot will scour roads in the 48 square-kilometre forest looking for items that may have been discarded from a vehicle"

Missing William Tyrell, 3, 'picked up by a car' police now believe | Daily Mail Online

Edited to say some things, not someone

Could be items discovered in recent searches.

Lawyers conducting defamation cases against MSM might give them a ‘friendly’ warning. Personally, I get the impression that Mr O’Brien isn’t a very nice man.

That is pretty judgemental. He was there representing his client in a professional sense. No need for niceties.

Excuse my limited legal knowledge but is it public who is called for inquest ? I imagine media will be camped out seeing who goes in and out of of the court that week . Are they allowed to report who is present ?

One article said there will be a Witness list issued in February.

A brief biography online says Gail Furness SC majored in journalism and dabbled in philosophy

She is the calm but persistent voice who, for two-and-a-half years, has publicly grilled confessed paedophiles, alleged child abusers, countless victims and many others about the magnitude of child sexual abuse in Australia.

Gail Furness SC was appointed as senior counsel assisting the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse when it began in September 2013. Yet until this week she was hardly a household name; instead overshadowed by whichever witness was giving evidence.

Now she is likely to be best remembered for her relentless questioning of Australia's most senior Catholic, Cardinal George Pell, who for months has resisted pressure to appear before the inquiry to answer questions about what he knew about alleged child abuse within Australia's Catholic Church.

Gail Furness: The calm, relentless voice questioning Cardinal Pell

So Mr Savage's legal representation when organised can ask the witnesses questions?

If you are not a relative of the missing person and wish to ask questions of witnesses, it is advised you seek leave to appear at the inquest by making a written request to the Coroner prior to an inquest. You must demonstrate to the Coroner that you have something instrumental to add to the inquest by appearing. If the Coroner considers you to have sufficient interest, leave may be granted. This means you will be given permission to question witnesses.

It is said that Mr Savage is going to give evidence. Who knows if he heard or saw something that morning. Or if, due to his location, he knows that no-one left via the bush track (just hypothetical). Or if, due to his location, he heard a vehicle driving on the bush track at that time (again, just hypothetical).

We have never known all the evidence that the police have that has kept Spedding as a primary POI/suspect. Perhaps the first part of the the inquest is going to be all about this type of evidence. As soso says .. the hot spot.
With several months interlude before the next part of the inquest to allow police to advance their case with whatever is revealed in this first part of the inquest.

Paraphrase ...
Paul Savage, who is a neighbour who joined in the search when William vanished, joined the brief hearing by phone and will give evidence when the inquest commences.

Thankyou , so it’s possible he is there on his own merit rather than actually being compelled to come forward ? If that makes sense

That is what I have been wondering actually.
It is not as if the police or anyone would have let a tidbit like that be revealed ... to protect Mr Savage, and to hold evidence back as they do.

I have been thinking that Mr Savage might be the local person who knows why the search earlier this year was diverted to Batar Creek Road.

Seems that could well be the case. If you want your voice heard or your questions answered and you are an interested person, seeking leave seems to be the way to go.
