It costs more to keep someone who is given the death penalty than it does to keep someone in prison for natural life.

Do you know why? More staffing on death row?
Not that it's relevant as there is no death penalty in Australia!

Arguing about the death penalty is moot, given it doesn't exist in Australia. Not telling y'all what to post, of course :)

(totally off topic random thought... in the UK we refer to Australia as "down under". What do you call us in the northern hemisphere? Up Over? Keep it polite!)

How ridiculous is bureaucracy? William's poor innocent parents prevented from campaigning for their missing son, having rumours swell around them, while a child rapist (alleged, whatever) is given custody of his wife's grandkids.

Not being a subscriber to Ancestry.com, all I can see is that there were 6 Speddings in the Werriwa, Campbelltown electorate in 1980. Perhaps direct relatives and perhaps one may be the spare block with the caravan on it in 1987 that is mentioned in MSM.

Not arguing - just differing opinions. Cases like this and Jill Meagher, and Stephanie Scott just make my blood boil. Had my rant, voiced my opinion. Peace out ;-)

Those who got peddo vibes from Spedding at the start certainly have a good radar. I always thought I was a good judge of character but I had the feeling he was protecting someone involved, not that he was involved himself. I know others thought the same. I remember it being said that victims would've come out and shared their stories if he was a peddo, but since there was nothing coming out it seemed strange that police were stil obsessed with him.

Looking back I think the victims were told to hold back until now. All the stories will come out. I think we haven't even heard the worst of it. There are cases of more than one adult. It's some sort of strategy to get the victim's stories out now.

I'm with you. I looked at his Facebook in the early days and pretty much decided he was a good family man - pics of camping trips, days out, normal interests, raising 3 step-grandkids who he seems proud of etc etc. But as time went on and the police didn't let up I did start to wonder.

We had a famous case here (Joanna Yeates) where a POI was splashed all over the press for days on end. He looked weird/creepy and I think the whole country believed he'd done it. He didn't. He got a lot of compensation from the media and changed the way POI's are reported. Made a lot of people think, and it works both ways I guess.

I think the police have probably been building a good case file against Spedding and are only now ready to release it. Let's see what else comes out of the woodwork.

I reckon they could have spent the last 6 months anguishing between watching and waiting for him to lead them to William, and wanting to lock him up to get him away from children.

I guess no DNA testing available back then? Or not enough evidence?!! Either way it's rubbish..
