San Antonio police have called off their search of a landfill after finding no signs of a baby missing since December.

Police started the landfill search after Johnson told McQueary that she had killed their child and threw him in the trash. She later retracted that statement and told investigators she gave Gabriel to an unknown San Antonio couple she met in a park.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Friday that after searching through 4,260 tons of debris, no evidence of a homicide was found.

Johnson was arrested in Florida on Dec. 29 and extradited to Arizona. She faces charges of custodial interference, kidnapping, and child abuse.

McManus said the case will remain active. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-THE-LOST.

Private Eyes Share Secrets in Texas

Private investigators from across the globe have gathered in Dallas for the World Investigators Conference. And in this business of spying, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Nobody knows that better than a guy who’s been doing it for half a century: Jay J. Armes. “It's very condensed and it's hands-on,” says Scott Belshaw, Ph.D. “So you're working with actual-- your instructors are actual private investigators in the field.”

Belshaw and Armes are just two out of hundreds of private investigators participating in the conference, which is held every five years. “There are people here from France, from Malaysia, from Mexico, from Spain, from England,” says ace investigator Steven Rambam. “From, I believe, 40 different states.”

In 1921, for example, word spread in newsprint about wanted criminals. A newspaper called “The Detective” printed their mug shots and their crimes.

Today, that function is fulfilled on FOX 26 by the television show, America’s Most Wanted. “People call America’s Most Wanted the electronic poster,” says the show’s host, John Walsh. “We've been on 22 years. Last Saturday night was our one-thousandth show.”

John Walsh addressed the conference Friday morning.

Logan McQueary told KPHO reporter, Elizabeth Erwin, that he has already found a job and an apartment in Texas. He said he will be heading back to Texas at the end of March.

McQueary said his new private investigator is turning up new information. He said was not surprised SAPD did not turn up any evidence in the 16-day search through a San Antonio landfill.

At a Team Gabriel fundraiser in Avondale, Arizona, McQueary said he has tried on numerous occasions to speak to Elizabeth Johnson, but he said she refuses to talk to anyone but her brother.

The father of a missing Arizona baby says he plans to move to San Antonio, Texas, later this month to continue the search for his son.

Logan McQueary made the announcement Saturday night during a fundraiser. It was the first time he'd spoken publicly since police in San Antonio called off a landfill search after finding no evidence in Gabriel's disappearance.

McQueary says he already has a job and an apartment in San Antonio.

He's spent the last several months hunting for Gabriel. He believes the baby is alive and may have been illicitly adopted.

Elizabeth Johnson, 23, asked for new representation because she said her current attorneys were ignoring her request to ask the judge to reconsider letting her out of jail, according to Judge Timothy Ryan.

Johnson also told the judge she felt her lawyers were pressuring her, but Ryan said it was for her own good.

"The reality is they have a case involving baby Gabriel, and the police want to know where baby Gabriel is located," Ryan told her. "So when your attorneys come to you for information from the police … the reason they're doing that is not to pressure you. It's their ethical responsibility to talk to you about those things.

During the hearing Ryan refused to fire Elizabeth Johnson's lawyer. Johnson had asked the judge to fire attorney Vanessa Smith, saying in a motion handwritten on notebook paper that Smith "does not file motions I request and pressures me to do what she wants." The 23-year-old Johnson's lip quivered when Ryan mentioned her son Gabriel, who was 8 months old when he was last seen in late December in San Antonio.

Judge Ryan would have ruled on two motions had Johnson come to court last week. Those motions -- to designate counsel and designate the case complex -- can not be ruled on without the defendant in court.

ABC15 spoke with forensic psychologist Dr. Michael Bayless, who has not evaluated or treated Johnson, to get some insight into the reason she's being so uncooperative with authorities. "Possibly, she has an emotional disturbance which is causing her a great deal of fear and anxiety, which she is attempting to avoid," he said.

As for why Johnson took off with her son Gabriel in the first place, Bayliss said the young mother may have thought what she was doing was good for her child. "Sometimes people become very obsessed," said Bayless. "And they're compelled to do something, in their mind, they feel as though they are saving the child. Preventing the child from being like the father or being like the mother."

"Just tell me where he's at," said Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary.

In her motion, Johnson wrote that Smith was "inadequately representing" her, adding that Smith had discussed the case of an unrelated client with her and that she thought Smith had been discussing her case with others.

Judge Timothy Ryan denied Johnson's request to fire Smith at a hearing Wednesday, telling her why Smith didn't file a motion to change her release conditions, and that she has been acting properly as her attorney.

"Right now the reality is they have a case involving baby Gabriel, and the police want to know where baby Gabriel is located," Ryan said. "So when your attorneys come to you with requests for information from the police ... the reason they're doing that isn't to pressure you, it's their ethical responsibility to talk to you about those things."

Johnson's lip quivered at the mention of her son, but she otherwise sat quietly in shackles and answered Ryan's questions with one-word responses.

Ryan granted Smith's motion to excuse Johnson from attending future hearings in her case except during trial or when otherwise ordered to do so. He also denied a motion by Smith to ban video and still cameras from the courtroom.

Smith had said the media coverage would taint potential jurors and deny her client the right to a fair trial, while media attorneys argued it was their clients' constitutional right to record the proceedings for the public and that any tainted jurors can be vetted before the trial.
