They did receive compensation from them, however. This DOES matter to people and helps mold their perception of the Celises and their intentions. That is why media addressed the issue.
I'm not picking on you but what does using a motel for an interview say about their character?
To me, it seems like they didn't want an interview in their house, which to me is understandable. That leaves having it at a family member's home which I wouldn't want either, or outside for the public to see which I'm sure the NBC producer didn't want to happen.
NBC probably said to them, "Hey, we'll pay for a motel to do the interview". I see nothing sinister in that. That's just my opinion, of course.
