Day one of high-profile Jamie Yazzie murder trial

Tuesday was day one of the Jamie Yazzie murder trial, something her family has waited more than four years for since her murder on the Navajo Nation.

The day began with jury selection, then the prosecution and defense gave their opening statements...

Five people testified on Tuesday, including Jamie Yazzie’s aunt Marilene and Jamie’s sister Elaina, who were in the True Crime Arizona documentary.

After that, an HR manager from the Indian health service took the stand, then somebody who would drive Jamie back and forth to work, and they finished up with a person who saw Jamie shortly before she disappeared and had contact with her. The Yazzie family is not talking publicly before a verdict because they don’t want to cause a mistrial.

As for Jamie Yazzie’s father, whose health is ailing, he told Arizona’s Family he has entered hospice care, but we’re told he’s desperately trying to make it to court Wednesday and is trying to see if his health will allow him to attend at least part of the day.

They left off with that last witness who saw Jamie shortly before she disappeared and will pick back up with that Wednesday.

We also expect to hear from tribal investigators this week. The trial is expected to last about three weeks.

“It’s a good feeling. It’s amazing,” said Yazzie’s mother, ED. “We’ve gone this far, and I thought it would never come. But today’s the day, and I am so happy.”

According to Gomez, James is facing life imprisonment for Yazzie’s first-degree murder and another life sentence for the remaining eight charges. Sentencing is scheduled to take place Jan. 29, 2024.

Gomez said Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sexton and LaGrange thanked her and Yazzie’s family for their efforts over the past four years.

“He (James) deserves it. He had no remorse in court. Didn’t look like he cared,” said ED.

A Navajo woman's disappearance ends in a murder conviction

Jamie Yazzie of the Navajo Nation disappeared in 2019. Her remains were found two years later. A man has just been found guilty of murdering her.

A 2017 study found that Arizona reported the third-highest number of cases involving missing or murdered Indigenous women and girls. The study further found these cases are likely undercounted due to a lack of consistent data collection.

“Vindicating the rights of missing and murdered indigenous persons requires all the energy and compassion we have,” United States Attorney Gary Restaino said in a statement following James' conviction.

James is scheduled to be sentenced in late January.

Yazzie was 32 and the mother of three sons when she went missing in the summer of 2019 from her community of Pinon on the Navajo Nation. Despite a high-profile search, her remains were not found until November 2021 on the neighboring Hopi reservation in northeastern Arizona.

Many of Yazzie's friends and family members, including her mother, father, grandmother and other relatives, attended all seven days of the trial.

"This family has been very active in advocating," said their attorney, Darlene Gomez. "This is a huge case for Indian Country. It's so unusual for these cases to get to trial, and then to get convictions."

Rayes to life in prison on count one and an additional 10 years in prison on count two to run consecutively, for the murder of Jamie Yazzie, a woman classified as a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Person from the Navajo Nation. A federal jury previously found James guilty of First Degree Murder for Yazzie’s death. The jury also found James guilty of several acts of domestic violence committed against three other women, all members of the Navajo Nation. Judge Rayes sentenced James to an additional 10 years in prison to run concurrently, and five years of supervised release for each of those assaults.
