"This is a case where, again, with the benefit of hindsight, we missed a call," said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, who is chairing a task force to reform Arizona's child-protection system. "We need to keep asking the question -- which is part of what this task force's responsibility is -- 'OK, why did they miss that call?' "

It seems like a such a no-brainer to me. Well, at least in cases like Jerice's. If you've been convicted of severe child abuse you need a restraining order and are never ever to be allowed to be near any children except on supervised visits (if deemed to be in the best interests of the child).

She should not have been allowed within fifteen miles of those children.

I am so angry. The adults who knew about this and continued to protect Jerice instead of Jhessye and the other children need to pay too.

I would like to donate something to go towards therapy for the surviving siblings.

"Mahogany said her cousin (unknown) witnessed Jerice beat one of the children (unknown) and say, 'I went to prison for four years because of you,' " the officer wrote, summarizing Hightower's report. "The report also stated that Jerice beats five of her children severely."

From that link:

"One that Glendale might want to revisit, because MH, a family member, reported to them the family's belief that Jhessye and her 13-year-old sister were being abused. The patrol officer assigned to the case didn't even talk to Hightower, much less the children she said were being abused, and a supervisor signed off on his report."

Going back to the whole bail issue... AZ will have messed up again if she gets out. Those children better be in a safe place where she cannot get to them b/c they are the prosecution's star witnesses, especially the older one. Without witnesses about Jhessye being in the closet, the case weakens...

Can you imagine the 14-yr-old's fear if Jerice gets out on bail? I'd be afraid to sleep at night, afraid of every corner I turned. :(

Please keep her behind bars. If not, please put those children where she can't get to them.

The quote from her saying that she needed to get out of jail to prove her innocence did make me wonder if proving her innocence involved any beating to get witnesses to retract their story (or die).

I hate having to think like this.

I'm just getting caught up here. Family all coming home for the holiday.
To the local who posted on here that Grandpa came into the store the day Jhessye went missing and said his wife was at her sisters or something like that?
Did you tell LE this information? If Grandma was NOT in California like she wants everyone to believe that needs to be told ASAP.

Can I ask a really stupid question, that I probably know the answer to?

What is with the statements about grandma and a cab?

I ask because, talking to grandmas husband, she was in Laughlin with her sister at the time the girl disappeared.

Bumping post from local

I think I remember reading that it was Jerice's grandmother, Jhessye's great grandmother. NOT shirley.

Before Grandma goes to jail... I would like her to be on a nationally televised interview and asked a whole lot of tough questions. I want her to have to admit she gave these children back to their mother. I want her to admit she raised a monster. I want her to admit that it was her idea for Jerice to call the cops to get Jhessye back from the cousins. I want her to admit she has helped Jerice fool the system. I want Grandma to be PUBLICALLY humilated before they close the cell door.
I know none of that will ever happen....but I can wish
I honestly cannot say who I am more mad at right now...Jerice or Shirley

I would love to see that as well. It appears, to me, that the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

From that article (bbm):

Maricopa County Dep. Attorney Rachel Mitchell asked a judge Tuesday to hold Hunter on $250,000 bond. Mitchell pointed to Hunter's past conviction in California on corporal punishment of her kids.

"She has recently tested positive for THC, which indicates drug use, marijuana specifically and also she has been made aware that she is the suspect in a homicide," said Mitchell.

That declaration was the first time an official indicated the investigation into the missing little girl was indeed a homicide investigation.

Family defends Jerice Hunter; neighbors feel "betrayed"
http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/...ighbors-say-they-feel-betrayed-134373233.html
Hunter's mother Shirley Johnson said she thought the accusations were "very suspect."
and
Hunter's father vowed to fight the accusations and said the family was bringing in private attorneys from Los Angeles.

I am waiting to hear how the surviving siblings are going to be painted as liars.

Where does the grandfather live? Is it in his best interests to get this swept under a rug because he was aware of the abuse that was going on?

Corporal punishment? Now let's call a spade a spade and a severe, atrocious assault a severe, atrocious assault. The word punishment would imply that the child did something wrong to deserve punishment but no child ever deserves to be the victim of violence.
