At 7 a.m., crews will begin painstakingly searching a local landfill for her remains.
Imagine searching 6,000 tons of trash inch by inch in an area 180 x 200 x 20 feet.
That is the targeted area where Glendale police think they have the best chance of finding Jhessye’s remains.
Officials say much of the searching will be done on hands and knees and they're not looking for a body, but likely body parts in decay or other kinds of evidence, like clothing.
This all starts Monday morning at the Butterfield Landfill in Mobile, which is south of the Valley.
More than 40 people, including officers, detectives, and the FBI, will be at the site each day searching for any sign of the missing 5-year-old from Glendale.
Police say they believe Jhessye’s body was put in a trash bin in Tempe before she was reported missing on Oct. 11, 2011.

Beginning at 7 a.m., a search team of more than 40 people, include the FBI and the Child Abduction Response Team, will pull together in search of the Glendale girl who was reported missing Oct. 11.

Crews will be searching daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday thru Friday, according to Sgt. Brent Coombs of the Glendale Police Department.

"Our agency's hope is that we are successful in finding Jhessye's remains, allowing her a proper internment, and ultimately bringing to justice the person or persons responsible for her death," Coombs said in a statement.

Investigators said they've narrowed their search to a roughly 180 by 200 feet area that's more than 20 feet deep. Police said it's the equivalent of one day's waste, which amounts to 6,000 tons of trash.

"We've tried to do everything humanly possible so that there is the most probability for success," said Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs.

Glendale police announced Dec. 21 that they believe Shockley's body was placed in a trash receptacle in Tempe and dumped in a landfill prior to her being reported missing.

just wondering if perhaps they got a hit on the dumpster (they seem very focused on the area in the landfill as well as the dumspter)

GLENDALE, Ariz. - On Monday, Glendale police start to literally dig for answers into what happened to missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley. They will begin the daunting task of searching a valley landfill.

It's where they believe they will find Jhessye’s remains.

What was initially a missing persons case became a search for a body when Glendale police announced new evidence -- a tip that led them to believe that Jhessye was killed.

They know they have a difficult job ahead but want to bring justice to this case.

police spokesman said a crew will dig up buried piles of trash and spread them out in an area for a search team to sift through. The arduous task is expected to take days, and authorities say that upwards of 6,000 tons of trash may be dug up.

The spokesman said while authorities don't necessarily need a body to prosecute what they believe to be a murder case, they are determined to search as long as it takes to find the body of the missing 5-year-old.

"That means ripping every single bag, going through everything," said the spokesman.

Jhessye's family members are hopeful.

Lisa Vance helped raise the girl while her mother served time in prison for child abuse involving Jhessye's older siblings. Vance said her family prays fate will lead police to Jhessye's remains.

"I'm very confident that when they go out there, however many days it takes, they are going to find Jhessye," Vance said. "They just have to."

Meanwhile, grandmother Shirley Johnson prays for another ending: That police won't find the 5-year-old in the landfill, but elsewhere and alive. Still, Johnson, who has repeatedly said her daughter is not responsible for Jhessye's disappearance, is grateful for the search. Perhaps it will bring closure, she said.

She just wishes police had started it sooner.

Hunter's attorney, Scott Maasen, agrees.

"They said almost two months ago they were possibly going to search the landfill," Maasen said. "It begs the question, why has there been a delay for so long?"

Police say they spent those months were spent preparing and assessing.

I would say they have pretty credible info on the day she was dumped in the dumpster and what dumpster she was in:

Coombs said analysis and research have led investigators to narrow down the search grid to a specific area that's about 180 feet by 200 feet. This area is more than 20 feet deep and contains about 6,000 tons of trash. According to Coombs, that's the equivalent of one day's waste.
The landfill search is a major operation and could take as long as six weeks.

so, it sounds like they are searching thru one day's waste from that area... I hope they are able to find her.....

eta: I keep seeing comments on news articles slamming LE that they are just now searching the landfill... but I seriously think this Tempe tip is recent (like 11 jan-ish)... remember earlier landfill talks (the one they had roped off the area in?)... well that was a completely different landfill iirc?

"We know a specific date that we believe the body was removed from the apartment made it's way over to a Tempe trash receptacle then removed on a specific day by a specific truck went to a transfer station was picked up by another specific truck and went to a specific location within the landfill," said Coombs.

Investigators say the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, is the focus of their investigation into her disappearance.

It would appear they have pretty specific info. Wonder how they came by it. Praying it is accurate and leads to Jhessye

dang!

I knew they had specifics!!!!

maybe more specific interviews with the kids? I am sure they know when they stopped seeing her in the closet...

does anyone recall Jerice's ties to tempe? I remember hearing Tempe before the latest news from LE iirc

  • #435
I have never heard who jerice knows in the tempe area or what the connection is to tempe. Le seems very sure, right down to the dumpster.

I dont think it was one of the kids. Jerice has no vehicle so she would have needed transport there. I dont see her dragging the rest of the kids with her on this mission. Wonder if a taxi driver or acquaintance who drove her came forward with this info.

Wonder if any of the people being surveiled by gps device lives in tempe?

Praying for the workers today as they begin this arduous task. Finding a child would be extremely difficult and unfortunately memorable for the workers. Praying they have the strength and the sight to see what they need to see to bring Jhessye home for a proper burial.

"The technology that's in place right now puts us into a better position to be successful than in landfill efforts in the past just because we are in a position where there's much more scientific analysis that's able to be done in this particular situation," said Sgt. Brent Coombs of the Glendale Police Department.

another snip:

Coombs said there is the potential for finding a body with "punctures, scratches, lacerations," and that the technology also can find things emitting gasses, "which is why we have hazardous materials (team) here monitoring the area."

"We've tried to do everything humanly possible so that there is the most probability for success," Coombs said.

Regardless of whether they find evidence, Glendale police said they will turn their case over to the county attorney's office for review and prosecution.

wow... reading more about the landfill they are searching... it is the largest landfill in the state of Arizona..

  • #439
What a daunting task for the workers. My prayers are with them but more importantly, my prayers right now are that Jhessye is finally found and can be laid to rest.

Investigators narrowed down the specific day they believe Jhessye's body was disposed so they'd be more likely to find the girl's remains and dozens of officers, FBI investigators and others prepared for the search with training and shots, said Officer Tracey Breeden, a Glendale police spokeswoman.

"We feel like we've identified the right location and we're going to give it our best shot," she said.
