Details of Disappearance

Dunne last contacted his family on March 18, 2017. He frequented the Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona areas at the time of his disappearance, and was staying in a homeless shelter in Phoenix. He would contact his mother in Montana every couple of months, but then the calls suddenly stopped and he has never been heard from again.

According to Dunne's family, he was a "free spirit" who worked odd jobs and was sometimes homeless as he struggled with his mental illness. His family would offer him help, but he always refused it. Foul play is not suspected in Dunne's disappearance, but given the lack of evidence authorities are concerned for his safety. His case remains unsolved.

Remains found at the base of Mt. Elden in the Fall of 2019 have been identified as Mark Dunne.

May 29, 2024

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Nearly five years ago, a hiker in the woods around the base of Mt. Elden came across the skeletal remains of an unknown man.

That discovery would spark an investigation spanning multiple states and several years. Only recently did advanced genetic testing help reveal the dead man's identity and give his family closure.

The remains were found in a heavily wooded area at the base of Mount Elden and have been identified as Mark Austin Dunne, who had been reported missing from Phoenix in 2017.

A DNA profile showed Dunne as a potential match, and further testing was conducted by the University of North Texas, confirming the match with Dunne’s family members.

His cause of death could not be determined.
