During the Arias penalty phase the Judge announced that the jury had reached a verdict but it was one of those 'no unanimous verdict' verdicts.

No they didn't. IIRC, they just called everyone in for what they thought was a jury question and then the judge announced it was a hung jury. A hung jury does not entail reaching a verdict so they don't use that verbiage.
