Investigators also learned that someone else had used Nilsson’s identity to get married in 1987.

No further details were immediately available regarding the misuse of Nilsson’s identity, and the circumstances around her murder have yet to be discovered.

Anyone with information about the unsolved murder is asked to contact the Maricopa County Medical Examiner.

Rest well, Renee.

Did Renee live in Arizona or California? It is unclear from the article.

I think she lived in Arizona, but her parents had married in California.

I found the marriage documents from the person who pretended to be her (still don’t know who it is though): “Renee” was married on November 26, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to a man who died in 1995. Their marriage was filed with Clark County on the 29th.

I don’t think these people were related to her murder though; if you wanted to get married but were a legal minor or otherwise couldn’t for some reason then somebody who was an adult (I guess she was probably born in 1969) that likely never had a social security number and had no financial activity or anything like that would be a prime candidate to impersonate.

RIP Renee. Article below is interesting in that someone used her identify to get married in 1987. Sometimes we see potential matches and exclude them based on marriage after disappearance etc. It definitely was easier back then to take on another identity.

From what I see, the man (born in 1943) lived until 2015, and they divorced (still using her name 🙄 ) in 1995. 'She' apparently filed for divorce. <modsnip: posting screenshots from paywalled sites>

Your photo got snipped for coming from a paywalled website, so here’s a link to the actual public record from a Washington government archives website. She listed her maiden name as Harrison, but the birthplace being California matches up with what has been said in news articles published today.

Yeah, it's interesting "Renee" wasn't using her fake last name here.

The below article mentions a similar nearby case in May, 1984, the Christy Ann Fornhoff case, but after I looked into it, I concluded that that the two cases don't seem to be linked at all-

According to public sources, “Renee’s husband” died in 2016 in Texas. He was married four times and his first marriage ended due to his cruelty.

Crazy, I know he died 10 years ago, but I wonder if the woman who used Renee’s documents is still alive, as she must be much younger than him. I read that when divorcing she put a different maiden name. Not Nilsson, still it must be hard for police to find her. I just think maybe she knows something.

Something hinky going on with that name......

I kinda don't think anything much is real with that name. Could be a fake "maiden name" on the divorce petition.

He had multiple marriages. I see many in Washington state. What did he do for work? Did he travel for work?

Perhaps he encouraged her to use that name? If she was too young to marry he could have conveniently come up with a name? Is it possible he was aware of what occurred to Renee, then encouraged his next round partner to use the name? It also breaks the link to the body being found and timelines. Perhaps she also read about the missing girl and adopted the name. It seems very strange.

From what I understand, Renee’s relatives reported her missing, but I’m not sure whether the police lost her report — which was common at the time when records were kept only on paper (she was not listed on NamUs in digital era either). Her relatives tried to arrange for her information to be printed on milk cartons, but it wasn’t free, and the family couldn’t afford it. So, I am not sure if the other girl knew about her.

I kinda doubt that someone read about her being missing because it doesn't sound like it was publicized.

I'm leaning towards the woman who took her identity, or the man she married, knew her (or of her) in some way. Someone who went to the same school, a neighbour, a work colleague of her parents, friend of a family friend, some kind of connection. Either that or having something to do with her demise. I think it's entirely possible that her killer wouldn't have even known her name, though, if it was a random stranger murder.

Or it could be both. Killed by someone she vaguely (or otherwise) knew (thus may have accepted a lift from?) who then knew her identity could be used.
