Tempe PD release bodycam after teen suspect shot and killed

"TEMPE, AZ — Bodycam footage has been released of the officer-involved shooting in Tempe that left a 14-year-old burglary suspect dead.

Police say the burglary suspect shot and killed by an officer Tuesday afternoon was a 14-year-old boy with a replica airsoft gun.

According to police, just before 2:40 p.m., officers responded to an alley for a report of a suspicious vehicle."

too many facts unknown, there is no evidence he brandished the gun - which was not a deadly weapon, it was an airsoft that he took from the truck (no way for the officer to know this), so it doesnt appear that he was out armed and committing crimes. *generally* the police are not allowed to shoot people just for running from them. but this varies depending on the specific circumstances and on the fleeing felon laws in that state.

"It really doesn't change the dynamics of the event from the officer's perspective unfortunately. It is impossible to train someone on what is a real weapon and a fake weapon. It's just impossible," Boontjer explained.

Boontjer said airsoft guns typically have an orange tip to indicate they're not real firearms. However, he said, some people remove the orange tip, or it can be hard for an officer to see during a chase.
