Accused Arizona polygamist cult leader Samuel Rappylee Bateman allegedly had 20 wives, many of whom were minors and possible included his own daughter, the FBI alleges.

The FBI is accusing a 46-year-old Arizona alleged polygamist cult leader of having 20 wives, many of whom were underage — as young as 9 years old — and of possibly marrying his own daughter.

The wives were allegedly trafficked across state lines in a trailer — forced to use a bucket as a toilet — while the self-proclaimed prophet drove two Bentleys while pushing failed business ventures in real estate and goal coaching.

Samuel Rappylee Bateman — as well as his coconspirators and aiders and abettors — is accused of engaging in the transportation of minors in interstate commerce to engage in criminal sexual activity and travel interstate commerce to engage in illicit sexual conduct with minors, between May 2020 and November 2021, between Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Nebraska. He was first indicted by a federal grand jury on Sept. 6.

The investigation revealed that on August 28, 2022, Bateman, with aiders and abettors, committed obstruction of justice by destroying records of their illegal actions, according to federal prosecutors.

They SAY they are following God's will. Plural marriage is practiced by fringe sects (personally I would call them cults) of quite a few religions. I have my own thoughts on what I would call these men. But that is MOO.

What will happen to his young "wives" if/when he goes to jail and does not come back to his family? Certainly it would be another male member of the group, very likely to be appointed by Warren Jeffs, who is still in the Big House.
These women and girls probably know little or nothing about how to get along in the world without him. Hoping the "wives" get along well and can help each other. This is such a sad, sad, thing, but that's IMO.

No kidding. Jeffs got away with all that for a good long time, but his reach is still pretty strong, apparently. At least he's in the slammer SMH.

I wonder how many of Bateman's poor "wives" are crying themselves to sleep at night? Many, I'm sure. SMH. Most of them only know life as it is in that "cult," as I must call it. I feel so sorry for those wives, oh I do. And surely there are many little ones and older children to feed in those families. Hoping they will help each other and get on with things the best they can. I would assume the wives have little or no money of their own, so what about food, clothing, utilities, etc., etc. Some of these type families are on welfare, so maybe they are too.

And that man. SMH. I know where I'd like to put that Bentley he was driving, but I'm too nice to say...

Eleven years old.
And she is considered to be one of his wives.

None of these girls look like they're getting much to eat, either.

Imo -- their only hope of a normal life may be if they're placed in foster care, and kept away from SB for good !

That's the thing.
The life that they have lived -- since birth, actually -- is what and all they know. How much shattering would they undergo if they were placed in the county/state of Family/Child Services, or whatever the name?
They would need counseling for how long? How would they do if placed with a "normal" family or with a caregiver in a foster home? It's exactly what they would need -- to gradually learn another type of day-to-day living, public school, regular clothes and toys, etc., etc. This is a tuff, expensive, and possibly long-term thing.
All I can do is think positively for all involved and hope that the lives of these children are properly transformed. Heartbreaking. And there are others like them in other small sects like this one we're seeing here. SMH.

I watched Under the Banner of Heaven based on his book, a few months back. It was quite a mini series.

This is straight up David Koresh (Branch Davidians) who also convinced the men in his cult to give their wives and daughters to him for sex.

Also Carolyn Jessop wrote Escape about her experiences getting out of the FLDS.

There is also a book I liked by Sam Brower called Prophet's Prey which documents the author's experience as a private investigator who helped catch and jail Warren Jeffs.

I hope there is enough of an infrastructure of those who have already escaped, that these young girls have plenty of support.

There is also a book I liked by Sam Brower called Prophet's Prey which documents the author's experience as a private investigator who helped catch and jail Warren Jeffs.

I hope there is enough of an infrastructure of those who have already escaped, that these young girls have plenty of support.

Yes, I read the Jon Krakauer book, Under the Banner of Heaven, and it was a tuff read but very well-written, especially knowing it was true. I would recommend it. The compound was in a fairly deserted area, and a world apart. Women were under the control of their husbands in every way, but it's a world they knew. A tuff life for women and their daughters.
I have also read Jessup's Escape -- amazing what she did. Also recommended reading IMO.
I may have to read Wariner's book -- I am not familiar with it.
