Shrine found in tent in Loughner's backyard by KTAR.com (January 10th, 2011 @ 9:19am)

We're putting up a dedicated live stream through our Ustream account of the UMC vigil. Stand by for that. just tweeted from www.kold.com

Good afternoon hope everyone is having an o.k. day.

Busy day here in Phoenix w/ the hearing at 2pm and the national BCS championship tonight. Traffic is crazy downtown and I saw tons of police while driving to campus to pay my tuition.

Stay safe.

I gotta say, that mug shot just freaks me flat out. The "shrine" equally so. Having spent about 10 years (no longer) living next door to a paranoid schizophrenic frequently off meds, I heard and saw all manner of "out there" things, and eyes from vacant and doing everything they could to avoid human contact, to flat out "I could go nuts screaming at my demons any second." Those eyes look more like the latter scenario.

Sad indeed that as adults, they can't be touched if they don't want help, and the more years into schizo they get, the more many of them believe there is nothing wrong with them and refuse to take any meds and try to hide their illness. Have seen that play out too many times in the news.

...Pima Community College officials said that beginning in February, Loughner had the first of five contacts with police at the college. In September, officials said Loughner posted a YouTube video declaring Pima Community College illegal under the U.S. Constitution along with other statements about the college.

"College administration issued a letter of immediate suspension," officials said in a statement. "Two police officers delivered the letter of suspension to the student at his and his parent's residence and spoke with the student and his parents."

According to Pima Community College officials, Loughner and his parents met with Northwest Campus administrators Oct. 4.

"During this meeting, Loughner indicated he would withdraw from the college," officials said. "A follow-up letter was sent to him Oct. 7, 2010, indicating that if he intends to return to the college, he must resolve his code-of-conduct violations and obtain a mental-health clearance indicating, in the opinion of a mental-health professional, his presence at the college does not present a danger to himself or others."

First of all I want to offer up my thoughts to all the victims of this tragedy.
Second, I haven't quite read through this whole thread but I see lots of talk about schizophrenia, bipolar and other mental illness in regards to JL and I'm wondering if this is all just speculation or if some evidence has come forth that states he suffered from something like this. I guess when I think of people highly effected by the above mental illnesses, and undiagnosed/unmedicated, I think of people who are by and large out of control of their faculties and often their actions. I don't want to feel any sympathy for this guy, or give him any excuses. Sure, perhaps he was mentally ill, but at this point I see him as a narcissistic, not too bright (but clearly wishing or fancying himself an 'intellectual'), soul-less, evil individual. He killed a 9-year old girl! And several elderly folks. I don't know - at this point I'm not giving JL any passes. I guess you could say all people who commit these types of atrocious crimes are 'mentally ill', i.e., clearly their minds are not healthy, but right now I'm calling evil and soulless on this one.

I don't know if this guy is mentally ill, or not. What I do know, is we have so many young male children on drugs, because they don't sit still in class. How in the 25 years do we get better then half of a Nation, considered mentally ill?

When I was very young, I went through a divorce and was raising my baby boy by myself. Aids was just coming to light at that time, it was a very scary time. I asked my grandfather (a very simple, loving man) how do I raise a boy by myself without messing him up? He looked at me and laughed, his father had died when he was 10 days old, and he was raised by a single mother! He said, "here's what you do, don't ever let a psychologist near him, if he don't know theres a problem, there won't be one." He went on to say, he is pretty sure he was a latch key kid, dirt poor even by the great depression standards, but he never stold anything in his life, and he had wonderful memories of his childhood!
I have to wonder where is personal responibility? And if the perp was smoking dope everyday, how can he be considered mentally ill, and not simply killing brain cells by smoking dope? He made sure he got his change from the taxi driver.
The only person that I have seen in the last 10 or 15 years that I thought was mentally ill, and unable to atone for her behavior was Andra Yates! This of course being high profile crime!

From the article above:

The Journal reported that Smith did not think Randy Loughner had worked since his son was born, but raised the child while Amy Loughner had a steady job.
Smith told the paper that he did not know the couple's last name until Saturday, despite having lived across the street since 1972.
Despite this, he described himself as probably one of closest neighbors to Randy Loughner.

Hmmmm.

I've also seen it mentioned in previous articles that Randy Loughner would routinely ignore his neighbor's attempts to make conversation.

Can't help but wonder if there is a history of mental illness in the family that made it more difficult (particularly for Dad) for his parents to realize the extent of their son's problem.

How terrible for the parents. I wonder if the suspect has siblings, or if he was an only child. Gosh. You raise a child and hope for the best. The article makes me think the parents really didn't understand their son needed help. The mother worked for Pima County.

Interesting rumor - don't if it's true. Druge Report mentions this, too.

Jared Loughner had been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system.

Has there been any mention of siblings. I completely understand and support keeping siblings' names out of the media but I am wondering if JL is their only child. Has this been reported?

Ooops! I see Trino has the same question above. Sorry for the redundancy.

I presume that the parents must be of normal intelligence because the mother has a regular job,but I suspect at least the father suffers from mental illness himself. I'm starting to feel some anger at he parents(don't hurl anything at me),but imagine Jared as a small boy looking out at his neighborhood ,watching other kids play and he can't come out because his father won't let him. No wonder he has MI. And for them to be shocked, please, your son has a shrine with a skull in the backyard, the college has informed you he is mentally ill?!!! I am starting to feel they are responsable for not getting help for their son(unless they tried and we aren't aware).
I would love to hear what the mother's co workers have to say. What was she like.Did she interact, did she talk about her personal life?

First of all I won't hurl anything promise, lol.

After a certain age imo you cannot hold the parents responsible.
I have a brother who is violent, my Mother prays every day for him and it breaks my heart to see the things he does to her. He is 36.
My Mom will not talk about the things he does to her co-workers, she tried for years to get him help, nothing helps him because he will not help himself.
I love him because he is my brother but I sure don't like him or the things he does.

I wish all states could make the protesting of a funeral illegal, I really do.

Doctors at University Medical Center said Tuesday that the condition of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) is unchanged from Monday.
Giffords, 40, remains in critical condition after she and 19 other people were shot Saturday at an event she was holding to meet constituents outside a Tucson supermarket. Six were killed and 14, including Giffords, were wounded when a young man with apparent mental problems opened fire on the gathering with a handgun.

"She's holding her own," said Michael Lemole, chief of neurosurgery. "She's following simple commands."
The commands include squeezing a hand, wiggling toes, giving a thumbs up sign. Lemole said he'd seen Giffords scratch her nose -- all positive signs. Doctors said concerns about swelling of her brain have gone down each day. Giffords has yet to open her eyes. Lemole said it is "hard to say" if she recognizes her family -- in part because she's been sedated.
Lemole said Giffords is breathing on her own but doctors are keeping the breathing tube in to keep her airways clear. "This phase is up to her. It's week to week, month to month," Lemole said. "We have to play by her timeline, not according to ours. We're very encouraged." Based on the severity of her injury, he said, "She has no right to look this good. We're hopeful."
Doctors brought in military physicians who are experts in severe brain injuries who said "she's thriving" and that the bullet entered the skull and exited out the back.
Six patients remain at the hospital with Giffords. Besides Giffords, three are in serious condition and two in fair condition.

I wish all states could make the protesting of a funeral illegal, I really do.

I will NEVER understand what makes a person feel it's ok to protest at a funeral. Talk about one of the most disrespectful things I can think of. It's honestly disgusting.

I completely agree, but didn't the courts support the {mod snip} right to protest?

I believe so, maybe under freedom of speech?

IMO it should be considered a hate crime.
