Bad Bras: A consumer alert

philamena, you beat me to it. Who needs a shiny, crisp looking bra anyway if that means formaldehyde is on it?! Please, I'll just have mine soft and lumpy, as usual.

gross. as if we didn't have ENOUGH chemicals attacking us from every angle.. and we wonder why so many women (and, men..) end up with breast cancer...??

this is why i'm learning to sew so i can make my own clothing.. especially bras. the quality of VS has really gone downhill in recent years.. like all designer stuff.. it's all about the name,, they no longer care about quality.

Have you ever heard of Dr. Lorraine Day? She swears that Bras and deodorant are the cause of Breast cancer. She is very eccentric, (and a questionable conspiracy theorist), but some of her stuff is interesting to read.

OMG.. that flip-flop thing was HORRIBLE!!!!!! you gotta wonder.. do the chinese soak everything they sell in a bath of radioactive nuclear waste, nitroglycerine, and battery acid? how does anyone over there ever live past 30, anyway?

Let's go back to the days of bra burning and freedom!! hehehe I was a rebellious sort and refused to wear one until the proverbial pencil rule applied. :)

yeah, at a Mothers Acting OUT parade in Naahville someone was handing out pamphlets about the evils of bras and deodorants and makeup.

They suggested rubbing salt under your armpits to stop the wetness....
and making your own makeup using fruit dyes...

To Sherri79, I feel your pain! After nursing 4 babies mine are just trying to make a run for the belly!

I'm getting paranoid about buying anything from China. Did you see the pics other people submitted regarding the flip flops as well?

According to this doc (for one), it's mostly about movement vs. constriction.

He says, freer movement <increases lymphatic flow and thus cleans the breast of toxins and wastes that arise from cellular metabolism.>

Actually, this makes sense to me. Dr. Lorraine Day sound like a total quack, but check this guy out:

http://www.all-natural.com/bras.html

of course he's nuts if he thinks it's anywhere near comfortable for most women to go without! however.. there SHOULD be much more comfortable (and, breathable) options... and these are hard to find, unless you make yourself or buy from an independent company...

One would almost think they were doing intentionally. :waitasec: ;)

I think VS has really lost it's quality over the past years.

Doesn't surprise me a bit...
you know those fire-retardent pajamas they sell? (the ones that feel all stiff and icky)
Well, they're absolutely drenched in formaldehyde! I refuse to put them on my kids.

Btw, the salt crystal deodorant works REALLY well! I've been using it for about a year now and I was shocked at how well it worked. I usually buy this one: http://secure.tccd.com/shoponline/DeodorantCrystalPeach.asp
From what I hear though, for some people it doesn't work right away, you have to use it for a couple weeks before your body adjusts and detoxes out what the antiperspirants have been clogging up in there. Also, you have to put it on when clean, like straight out of the shower. It doesn't take away smell that is already there, just prevents the bacteria that creates the smell from forming. Anyways, I love it.

ckhagen,
One of my daughters was allergic to all deodorant.
Her dermatologist recommend the Crystal brand and it worked great for her.
I highly recommend it to people with allergies. It's also a great product if you've experienced staining on your bras, shirts, etc. that's caused by deoderant.

I am one of the fools who bought VS bras & had a allergic reaction such as they're all talking about. I never knew what the problem was. I DID wash it before I wore it. I bought mine after watching a show on Oprah & her saying they were the most comfortable bras ever made.

I went to VS first & asked them if they had any customers complaining about the bras? Gal acted like I was nuts for asking such a question. I told her I'd washed it & she said she was sorry but couldn't do anything to help me. I took it back to another VS & they refused to give me my money back because it had been washed.

Tomorrow I'll contact the company. But I won't sign a release form either. Who knows what the Chinese put in them? Wouldn't you think by now we'd learn not to buy anything made in China?

So, which bras were they? I have a newish one that hasn't caused me any problems. My Seamless one is pretty old though (from when they first came out). Other than that I've been nursing too long to bother buying a nice bra.

then, there's this:

<A. A few years ago, a book was published stating that underwire bras may cause breast cancer. This is completely untrue and there is are no credible studies to support that wearing an underwire bra can cause breast cancer.

Created on 12/19/2005
Source: American Cancer Society. Underwire Bras; http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MED/content/MED_6_1x_Underwire_Bras.asp?sitearea=MED>

so.... as usual,, who the heck knows who is right? it's a wonder we're not all nuts by now with a this constant barrage of conflicting information... :bang:

and cheko-

<Wouldn't you think by now we'd learn not to buy anything made in China?>
well, yes,, i think we are..... it's simple, really.. just DON'T buy it! see that's the thing... we see something we think we need... or we like, and we say, 'oh well it's MIC. that's too bad, because i need it.' well... i have put things back on the shelf and decided i really didn't need it after all, once i see MIC. and believe me i survived! think about it. if we really, REALLY want to boycott chinese-made crap,, we're going have to make a commitment. (then again, where were all these computer parts made? hhmm......)
OK so it's hard to be perfect. but really, we can always do better!!

i also got sick of watching things fall apart in no time, and wasting my money. for example... i bought a cheap fly swatter a few years ago. it barely made it though 10 swattings before breaking off bit by bit-- cheap plastic crap! i would rather pay $15 and have one that lasts, than buy a piece of cheap junk for $1.
so after a quick net search, i just ordered a USA-made one, made by the ohio amish that looks like it's built to last... made out of wire and leather, not crappy plastic.
the trick is..... look for american made stuff ONLINE and don't be tempted by all the malls and gross chain stores. it's hard, because they are so...... handy. BUT-- if you truly want to boycott china as much as possible.. then we have to avoid those places. once you get out of the habit, it's easy. you can find much better stuff other places anyway.. it just takes a bit more work, but i believe it's worth it. (or, learn to live more simply and go without!)

OK, end of rant.. (for now... lol)
